Windows media player uses 99% CPU.

Recently wMP 10 has been using 99% of CPU, and avaliable memory shoots down to something like 2%, being stolen by svhost and explorer etc.

This happens 2 minutes after windows media player has been opened. Even is no music is playing.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

I have tried reinstalling, turning off visualisations, and more.

I haven;t changed anything that could affect this, so why is this happening???

I had a similar problem with Firefox recently, I finally fixed it by running another app Virus checker)with a higher priority at the same time, this forced the system to lower FF's priority and it has been fine ever since.
FYI WMP10 is currently runnig at 0-2% with RadioIo streamed @128k

I wouldn't know if it is the cause, but if I remember correctly, there was a very recent critical update for WMP, I think the vulnerability affected WMP used with Non-IE browsers. Maybe the fix broke something.

THanks for your helps anyway, I have it fixed now, thanks to the amazing google group community.

Basically there was something wrong with my profile. Maybe it got overloaded, or corrupted or something. So I deleted the profiles in Local settings and Applications settings (which are hidden folders inside documents and settings folder).

Now it works normally again, under 4% with 192kbps wma music files

Mel, about firefox, by prioritising it, you may not have actually solved the problem completly, perhaps just been patching up a wound with paper instead of bandages.

Ive looked in application data and local settings folders, and they contain the firefox profiles in there. I think you should delte them, then new ones will automatically be created. However make sure you back up your settings first.
None of my settings got erased when i delted those folders, but you never know.

EErrrrr that was me not Mel, I will try it if it goes again but it was several weeks ago and everything is still fine. If it aint broke, dont fix it.
