Windows XP SP3 Now Available via Windows Update

Vista skeptics clinging to XP will receive some upgrade action Tuesday when Microsoft officially releases the operating system's Service Pack 3 (SP3) via the software giant's online download center.

"We are in the final stages of preparing for release to the web (i.e. you!) on April 29th, via Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center," Chris Keroack, Microsoft's release manager for XP SP3, wrote in an April 21 blog post.

Not of much interest to me since I run Vista 64-bit as my main desktop ...

still baffles me why ppl even still use Vista l had a Vista system for all of a week before l thought it was total bull crap full of bugs and other unwanted nasties before l rolled back.

Lucky you. It came preloaded on my newest laptpop so can't be rolled back.
Had great fun with the update that wouldn't accept passwords after reboot. :hrmph:

Yeah, I take your point ... I wasn't really blown away by Vista but it found all my hardware and is pretty stable though Photoshop sometimes causes a bad crash or two. I would like to have run Server 2008 as my desktop but couldn't find a cheap copy. Anyway all my apps run in a glorious 8GB of RAM now and Service Pack 1 fixed the "slow copy" bug (showstopper really).

PS. Nice idea of Microsoft to let people run their OSs for a month or more without activation so you can check all your drivers/apps work on your system.

this is why if lm going to run legal l make sure l buy a copy, altho in my case lve only been legal in the last year or so, when they suddenly talked about going vista only l decided that it was time to snag myself a legal copy so l had one (since they are pretty cheap compared to what they used to be)

I usually buy OEM's (though Vista's license is rather strict so make sure you don't reinstall/upgrade too often) and then stick XP and Vista on a dual boot, perhaps with a side of linux too :) . Works well, though to date I've almost always booted into XP for the speed and performance benefits.

Word to the wise though, some people say SP3 for XP slows the system down by around 2%. I don't know how correct that is since 1-3% is typically within an average margin of error for any statistic.

xp service pack 3 now fully available from microsoft update
downloaded and installed tonight no problems, it reset some missing icon problems iv had for about 2 weeks now so i am happy

lm not gunna install for a while at least not until maybe 6months down the line as l remember all the hassle sp2 was messing up no end of systems.

I need to backup my system first, tried SP3 RC2 awhile back and it ruined the boot process so this time I'll be more careful.
