Wireless Broadband's Holy Grail?

Is this a Windup

Their "pretty big deal"? Inexpensive, wireless broadband that could drive traditional cable and phone companies out of business.

That's because EtherLinx has come up with a way to tweak inexpensive, readily available wireless fidelity — better known as Wi-Fi — and extend its range from mere feet to up to 50 miles at incredibly high speeds. The data transfer rate has been successfully tested at 10 Mbps, but when it reaches the market it will offer only 2 Mbps.

"First it was like a mile, then it was five miles, then 10, then 20," Holt said about the evolution of EtherLinx's development.

Faster Than a Cable Modem

The key to EtherLinx's success is a single, small antenna that can be mounted just about anywhere — on a water tower, on a building roof, or even on a billboard.

Sounds good to me, but will it happen???

I'm desperate for DSL so I can work efficiently from home, but at the moment I cant as all I can get is modem connection!

Disapointed in the BT demand thing, why aren't all exchanges on there not just 500? If my exchange was to have 500 demands on it for DSl, would BT install it?! doubt it... big con! As soon as some fast wireless/powerline connection comes we might get somewhere. BT may then realise they should've moved quicker as there losing custom! :o ]

IF (and it's a big IF) Etherlinx works, remember:
i) it has to have the same range at both ends of the link i.e. the fixed and the mobile ends

ii) A severely limited number (3) 802.11b networks can co-exist in any one area. If the omni-directional range of Etherlinx is greater than a few miles this is going to be a show-stopper. Think of FM radio: in order to have a national service, Radios 1, 2, 3 and 4 have to have different transmitters on different frequencies at adjacent masts for the system to work.

But if it works and it is secure then it is the Holy Grail for poor buggers like me trying to run a business from an exchange BT haven't even bothered to put on the pre-registration list.

Think you'll find the limit is 100mW, but none the less your point is valid.

Do you have evidence concerning the stations that have been shutdown? Just wondering what the penalties are if you do get caught?
