Wireless cards, Pre-n issues

this isnt my problem lm basically gathering information on an issue a friend has at the same time as contemplating whether its worth upgrading myself to the new version...

my friend upgraded to pre-n and is experiencing many disconnections.. in truth they wouldnt be noticeable if he was not on IRC however he keeps on dropping once every 5 mins on occasion, this used to be a problem when he was using bittorrent back then he was on the 802.11b/g one or the other but when he stopped using bittorrent for a week or two he was fine... altho at times he noticed then it was his cable modem causing issues... he has since upgraded to 802.11n (well pre-n) both hs router and reicever are version n however he keeps on dropping which like l said is only noticeable when we are on IRC (we run a IRC server remotely) so l was wondering if anyone knew any issues with that version of wireless (his hardware is made by belkin) from what l know his system is up to date with drivers and such he is using XP altho he does have vista on another patrician which sadly dosent support the hardware he has to connect to his router yet.

the fact is l wanna know more about his issue while seeing if there are issues and if its worth thinking about looking into a hardware upgrade lve been contemplating (which is mainly based on the distance and speed aspects of pre-n via wireless)

Provided the signal is reliable then I doubt the Wi-Fi spec will have anything to do with it, it sounds more like a software configuration issue or conflict with the Routers firewall. IRC is the bane of any computers security system as to use it properly requires that you open a fair degree of previously secured ports etc. Lots of people also like to scan ports and hunt for vulnerabilities while you’re hooked up to it.

I know that some routers also have stability problems when running SSH, IRC and certain IM communication systems that can cause random disconnections to occur (e.g. LinkSys/Cisco). I’d suggest making sure that the WLAN settings don’t have any timeout options enabled in case they’re being trigger somehow. Likewise you could try disabling the firewall, although that’s risky.

I’m not sure what else to suggest since everything else you’ve probably already tried, it’s one of those loopy issues that doesn’t really make a lot of sense.

l'll mention timeout settings, however he has always used wireless and we knew before the issue was to do with bittorrent this time its throwing us for six.. mainly because as soon as he moved to N there as been problems, and with G he could be connected for weeks with no probs.

in any case his card is USB l believe and he has upgraded his computer as well.. so there is hardware changes as well. will contemplate rolling the idea around with him later when he calls

We have experienced issues with mixed manufacturer pre-n kit. Is both his access point/router and PC wireless card the same make?

We personally don't like Belkin PCMcia or USB wireless cards having had loads of problems with them connecting to other manfacturers kit, but they seem to work fine with their own.

One notable one was where a corporate bought Linksys access points (yeah I know its tight) and they worked with every embedded card and all the add ons they put in. Then they couldn't get their normal PCM cards and they bought Belkins. They claimed low signal in cycles every few minutes even when you were sat 10 feet from the AP with clear line of sight. We changed the APs for Cisco Aironets and had the same problem. Eventually we binned the 25 Belkin PCM cards they had bought and replaced them with Linksys. Then everything was fine.

thats some pretty interesting info.. will pass it on.
