Wireless Modem - recommendations needed

Well finally live today, and tho l am online l am contemplating a new wireless modem as l dont think mine is at its best, especially since someone slammed my DG834N in another thread.

tho l plan to do a little research on my own juice l thought it worth asking peeps here for their recommendations, ideally l would like to stay with NetGear with N based wireless, now tho my current says l have full signal allot it cuts out every so often which is annoying... a good range would be a definite bonus with enough power to go through maybe two or three walls (not exactly thick as l live in a flat, pretty sure its just plaster of some sort)

in any case ideally l would prefer to spend less than or around £60, tho l may look at highstreet prices but it would be useful to have some specs and recommendations as l dont wanna get crap.

appreciate all the help of those who reply.

looking at the following possibilities:

IMO I wouldn't buy a Belkin, no matter how stylish they make them, I just don't think they handle ADSL connections all that well. I can't speak for the two Netgears listed but have you considered DrayTek?

personally lm of the same opinion with regards to Belkin l stopped using them seeing how messed up my ADSL Max at the time was getting hit, generally the connection just went stale and all l needed to do was reconnect but it would only let me reboot...

l really gained a passion for netgears after l took the plunge when l was with AOL, l just had enough of rebooting and loosing speed.

not heard of Dray Tek.

I have the DGN2000; it is a great little router.

It is a pity the same cannot be said for the software for the USB dongles.

Two different models Netgear dongle, identical crappy connection problems and totally screwed when trying to update the drivers.

I ended up using Windows built in system; less flexible, but at least I can get and hold a connection when I switch on; not have to pi$$ about for 1/2 an hour!!!

my wireless adapter is a Tenda W302U, its worked reasonably well so far, tho l had been wondering if it would work better if l used a RangeMax one since the router has RangeMax on it as well

Alot of good reviews on the dgn2000, thinking about getting one myself.
I've got a netgear dg834g V2, the first couple of days it kept locking up then after that it needs a reboot like once a month.
Generaly netgear's have been good to me.
Post what you've bought be intressed to know. :)

at the moment lm inclined to go for the DGN2000, the posts lve made havent got the kinda replies l sorta expected, tho lm told broadcom chipsets are the best to go for in a modem (mind you it was something an Aquiss support staff mentioned on their forum) and this netgear has just that...

one review l did see from some US based user did mention that it gets quite hot but dont all modems?

That depends on how you define "hot", certainly most electrical devices like routers will get mildly warm but hot.. hmm no not seen that before in consumer products. Routers/modems shouldn't eat too much power so there's really no reason for them to get hot unless the chips inside are very inefficient at handling power.

l do use my net pretty much 24/7 now tho so l would expect heat :p, however with regards to my statement, like l said it was something someone else stated on a US site..

hows its range? get good signal through walls?

as lve said there are two or three walls between me and my router, not exactly brick but plaster just wondered how well yours works with them.

bought the DGN200 should get it monday, some reviewers dont give it the best review but in general allot of ppl on ebuyer gave it high marks so l shall see, and hopefully it syncs better than my current.

Let us know how it goes.

One of these days I really should add the hardware reviews category to our system lol, it's already on the beta but I have to collect data and pictures on a lot of routers first.

Mine did get quite warm, so keep some free space around it.
I have mine supported on some old HiFi cones to get plenty of air underneath it.
Since doing that, it runs a lot cooler.

I had the same problem with my old Zoom X6; in the end I had to stick an old cpu fan on the top of it!!

nice, tbh l was gunna suggest that kinda section.

still with regards to heat issues, for some reason l find allot of manufacturers put the vents as the bottom which makes me wonder if they know that heat actually rises.

The zoom has a vented top panel, but that didn't stop it overheating in the summer; the Netgear doesn't get as hot as the Zoom did, well, not mine, I did read stories of some of them getting VERY hot. Netgear did exchange them, so perhaps a dodgy batch??

HEADS UP for anyone buying an "OP3" Pc from Aria.

Ease the tamper sticker off and open the case for a look around before firing it up; BOTH the units I bought had problems, one short circuited because the mobo was not secured correctly and a screw had come out, and on the other one they had forgotten to plug in the cpu fan!!!

I have tried to post a comment about this on Aria TWICE, but they keep deleting them.

They are good value, but suffer from poor quality control.

well my router arrived today however coverage is not as good according to signal strength, tho according to windows it doesnt look that bad (its just my adapters program that says its lower.

anywho, does anyone know how to change the modulation? there doesnt seem to be an option for it, over at Aquiss l was told that changing down to ADSL1 may improve my connection, as since l changed router lve lost a meg of sync speed.

Surely the ADSL protocol is set by the ISP??

My only suggestion is to reset the line stats by unplugging all the ADSL stuff, including filters, for 40 minutes; that assumes it is a BT line, not a LLU, I dont know if it works on them.

If there is not an option in the user interface, then if it has a broadcom chipset you may still be able to temporarily set it to G.dmt by enabling telnet and using the adslctl command "adslctl configure --mod d", but the setting won't survive a connection drop.

it is a broadcom chipset, l looked it up as it was suggested to use broadcom by reps over at Aquiss, however after searching google and seeing how ld have to telnet in and other stating it could be requested by speaking to the ISP, lve been told within the next three days they will change me over to an ADSL1 port so lm forced to use D.GMT which will hopefully allow me to sync at a higher rate (started at 2.5 meg but have slowly fallen down to 1meg) lm told with LLU based connections they tend to "fall off" quicker when concerning long lines, which mine seems to be.. shame really because l thought with my IPlate installed it would help in cases like this XD
