wireless router with thick walls

hello,

I've recently upgraded to max with my ISP and now want to move to wireless so that I can move my computer into another room that doesnt have a phone socket.

my isp recommend a netgear DG834 model, but im not sure if that will be suitable because my house has quite thick walls. i was thinking of a USB wireless card for my laptop, would that work?

what can you recommend, what sort of range would a netgear have and where is the best place to buy them?

thanks

Rob

I have an DG834GT 108mb

I have mdf walls and the signal does not go very far, or at any real strength. Signal can be lost at abound 10metres from the router base, and there are many dead spots within the house, as discovered through using nintendo ds lite wi-fi.

I recommend a router that has actually been reviewed by some independent reviewer and scored excellently in the range tests. Manufacturers tout 108mb speeds and such, but realisticly, it may not mean a thing. Check the computer shopper website for reviews/labs tests, for the best router for your budget.

I wasn't impressed by the range of my old DG834G so ended up using HomePlug to spread the signal to the distant corners of the house - http://www.homeplugs.co.uk/acatalog/diagrams.html . Just helped install another HomePlug network for a relative who was worried about wireless range ...

Other people speak highly of MIMO equipment, but I've no experience of that. :hrmph:

Used a netgear DG834 now speedtouch 585i as I am on ADSL2+
My house has solid brick interior walls and proper floor boards no problems pc and laptop upstairs all wires free

my advice get a ADSL2 router wires free

A general tip; you would want to try to position your router on a high position. Ive done the same thing as you, i can hardly connect when its on my desk (i have thick walls too) but on top of my bookshelf, signal's pretty good.

I have a DG834G, and I too am a little un impressed with the range. but I bought a 7db antenna form ebuyer for about £12 and the signal is much better. it's not 100%, but before it would sometimes lose the signal, doesn't seem to now. but its only going through 1 floor and a standard brick wall. I think if I were move the PC that uses it further away, I would go the way of those plug in's that Bob mentioned. the MIMO routers do sound very good, but when I got my router, they were not around then. bit pricey to replace a router that works fine.
