world of warcraft

Apparently it costs £8 a month for a one month subscription of the game. If all those that have it, were regular players and payed this subscription, blizzard would make 28 million a month and 336 Million in a year.

My question is, how much did it cost to develop and how much does it cost to maintain the MMORPG world.

Either way, Blizzard are quids in. Now imagine if they charged for Warcraft...

I think they need to balance the servers more. I got friends on one server which I cannot get on because it's full to the brim. the lag can be dire at times, and they have to wait a get in sometimes. why the hell for the money that they get, couldn't Blizzard just allow a max number of players on every server that wont cause slow down? there a pile of full or servers, and a pile of half empty ones.

of course blizzard are raking the money in, but from a business point of view there are going to be huge costs because the game is so big.

costs like maintaining servers, housing the servers, paying people to moderate, update and over see not just uk or america, but worldwide! R&D costs, etc etc. so becuase its so big, its making lots of money, but spending lots of money too.

also, don't forget that blizzard aren't just relying on WoW, they're going to be creating new games all the time, so there's massive costs in that! so yea, WoW is their "cash cow" but remember that revenue does not equal profit.

 They charge 15 pounds simply to later the server on a players profile. If thats not a case of revenue>costs, i dont know what is. Plus 7.5 million people paying £15 a month:eek: I somehow doubt that all the costs you mentioned above will be anywhere near the sheer amount of money flooding in.

Plus blizzard are sticking with wow for the forseeable future. Its generates so much profit that they will be releasing content updates (12 patches in total) and their upcoming expansion pack nearly continuasly. What did you hope they would be working on? Starcraft 2? The (paying) wow community demands so much content, and blizzard will be more than happy to oblige

Finally the whole point of a "cash cow" is so that they generate profit. Whats the point of developing a loss making mmorpg? It would get instantly canned thats what. patches, expansions, will all stop immediately.

i never said that WoW was making a loss, i said its making money, the exact same point ur making. all i was saying was that all that money is going into R&D, also what u said. just read it a bit better next time, and thanks for re-iterating my point!!

it just seems you whole post implies that costs makes up 99% of their total revenunue. Unless you happen to know what their accounts are like, you cannot assume anything about them.

And of course, lets not forget the quad-boxers. Anyone else who plays will probably have seen some people that do this...although probably not all that often. Think the more common classes are warlocks/elemental shamans (Only ones I've seen anyway). So this guy...pays for these 4 accounts. Such an awesome hold this game has on people to make others want to do this.

If i remember right, thinking back to year 2005, i read WoW had cost $65 million to make.

So Blizzard are making an insane amount of profit.
