Worth trying Be/ADSL2?

I've read people saying to post in their details to figure out what rough speeds are possible with ADSL2.. Mine sadly looks like they could be a problem.. not sure on distances to exchange, nor where to find it out.. anyways i'm on with bulldog and get 2meg, with full speed fine.

Here are my stats out of an older looking Netgear DG834G (not even sure if this is ADSL2 compliant)

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2272 kbps 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 42 db 12 db
Noise Margin 17 db 24 db

line attenuation looks a bit high though some claim that up to 60 isn't too bad.

My only other question is whether Be has shaped up to be unlimited with its download amounts, i could have heavy months i guess, or rather heavy weeks.. but i've never had any messages from bulldog about this. Are there caps for Be.. has anyone been really downloading higher than standard ISP limits through Be no problem? ie. 50-100gig + per month.. the thing is if i was to get 4 times more speed say, to around 8meg+ then obviously it would be 4x easier to get more than what i currently am doing.

Cheers

Jim

it isnt, and the DG834Gv2 isn't 100% either the one that is ADSL2+ Complient is the DG834GT

thanks for that, i expected as much... buying a new router wouldn't be a problem. What about the line condition is it suitable for ADSL2?

Cheers

i just phoned Be.. they said that i'm at 3.3km or there abouts line length and with the attenuation above they wouldn't expect more than 4meg, possibly less.. they said ideal attenuations are from 10-25db. Guess not in this case. I wonder if I try moving my router temporarily to the main socket of the house, just to make sure that its not the internal wire that is doing it.

I'm a Be customer approx 3km from the exchange and i get well above 4mb.

Did you get sorted, how's the speed ? I have just signed up myself I am 1.4kkm away so hopefully will get something around 10Mbit at least

I did try a DG834G with my Be connection... Old router i used with ukoffline.
Would only sync at 7Mb with that.
So then i tried the Be Box (Speedtouch 780)....

Uptime: 8 days, 23:36:33
Modulation: G.992.5 Annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,261 / 10,929
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [GB/GB]: 2.31 / 34.88
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 19.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 20.0 / 39.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.5 / 8.0

Line length of 2Km
Very happy.. can get it to sync higher but get disconnected once a day by using dmt to lower the snr.
I get solid 1.1Mb/sec downloads. :D
I would recommend using the be box as it works straight off and BE only provide proper support for it.
Cant fault the service!! well worth the 99p less i was paying for 2Mb LOL

I have the same ISP, I'm on the same package and I have the same router and I am also thinking of moving to BE Unlimited.

Here are my stats:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2272 kbps 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 36 db 11.5 db
Noise Margin 20 db 31 db

Also the maximum speed I get is 240Kb/s. (1.875 megabits) (Despite the 2megabit package)

Will I be able to get the full glory of ADSL2?

You will be probably get along the same lines as me .. 11-12mbit.
As your line looks quite similar to mine.
