Would a MC801A with ethernet to usb adaptor work to connect to Asus router usb port?

Hi

I'm currently running a isp supplied router and mc801a both in bridge mode, feeding a tp-link er605 for failover and everything is great apart from to keep it working it's scheduled for daily reboots and after about a month i have to factory reset the er605 it as it starts issuing duplicate ip addresses.

Where i live fttp will be some time so vdsl is my primary connection.

My old asus dsl router does support one dsl/ethernet connection but not both at the same time, and usb for failover, would a mc801a with ethernet to usb adaptor work in this scenario? or should I just buy a draytek and be done with it?

Well i've pulled the pin and got a e3372 dongle purely for personal back up purposes. The wife's work, well that's her problem now. She can't say i didn't try.

I'll be selling the mc801a, mf286d and er605 shortly. It's a shame as with the mc801a i was getting nearly 300mbps but for whatever reason i presume latency, she couldn't access all her remote shared drives. but she can on fttc at 70mbps.

For me 4g with 4ca worked a treat in the loft and I'm starting to see 5g when walking about locally, hopefully that improves over the next 18 months of our fttc contract.

And then I'll try again to ditch the copper and fiberoptics

Funnily enough, I also run a dual WAN configuration with an ER605, and until recently an MC801a and Draytek DSL modem.

I’m using load balancing, but with 2 IP pools - each set to only use WAN 1 or WAN 2. So things like consoles and gaming PC’s using the fibre (low latency, crap speed) and TV’s etc use the 5G (crap latency, good speed) based on what IP pool it’s static IP is assigned to. Works well.

I ran the MC801a in router mode with DCHP off, as I could not reach the web interface in bridge mode. It worked great, no NAT issues, but it is not a problem in bridge mode now I have switched to an MC7010.

Until recently I used an Asus AX88U for Dual WAN, which was very buggy and unreliable. The ET605 has been absolutely flawless in respect to DUAL wan.

I have had a few issues with IP addresses occasionally being different to the fixed DCHP ones I had set, but that seems to have been due to my WiFi mesh (sometimes devices would connect to a node which had a bad backhaul connection, meaning the device had a random IP address). This was fixed easily by setting the static address in the device itself. I have never had a problem with duplicate IP addresses.

Are you sure there is nothing else on you network handing out IP’s? I have noticed DCHP can still be one with some routers even when they are in bridge mode. But could be your ISP router?

As for your original idea of using USB, I would leave that as an absolute last resort. They never work that well, and depending on the quality of the hardware and USB port speed, internet performance can be poor. Not sure it’s even possible with the MC801a anyway.

Thank you autopilot for such a in-depth post.

I've the newer Plusnet hub, also a bt business hub 2, obviously both revisions of the same base router, the duplicate IP issue eventually happens whichever is used, which is why I'm blaming the er605. But with the similarities between the routers that is food for thought.

I've already got a ethernet to usb-c connector for my laptop so I've ordered a usb-c to usb-a adapter. For the sake of £5 quid it's worth a punt.

The two up address pools is something I'll look into. Thanks for taking the time to reply
