Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro and SMARTY = no VoLTE?

Hi Everyone,

I'm experiencing some unusual issues with a Redmi Note 8 Pro with the SMARTY UK network and VOLTE. I've had 2 of these phones, both on the global begonia rom, one of which was given to my mum for use with SMARTY which works absolutely fine and can make calls using 4G with no issue.

However, my second phone which I kept hold of cannot seem to get 4G VOLTE working on it with SMARTY - Three UK works fine and can make VOLTE calls, but not SMARTY.

I've tried the VOLTE and VOWIFI dialer codes on, and off for carrier checks to no avail. Even unlocked the bootloader and change from what was originally the EU rom to the Global rom (same as my mothers) to see if that made any difference which it did not.

I can only imagine that there's a configuration file or something missing from this phone? Something that might need to be submitted by the carrier to the phone to enable VOLTE? I have no idea but it's truly baffled me and I'm hoping one of you far more knowledgable people can help!

Thanks

Not at all similar to the Pixel issues, Xiaomi devices don't really utilize a carrier profile

I am getting IMS not registered - likewise VOLTE and VOWIFI unavailable from dialer phone menu.

That's interesting to know thanks 😊 it makes me curious why profiles are even needed then, are they some sort of geo-lock to control what features are available and where, or have I totally misunderstood?

Profiles are used for a better user experience I think...

I'm not sure what use it does on the Pixel other than making visual voicemail seemingly show up in my settings constantly on O2 compared to my POCO (unprovisioned though, I have to ask O2 to do that).

Try entering this in dialler
*# *#86583#*# * For VoLTE

And

*#*#869434#*#* for VoWIFI
All this does is disable the carrier provision check, doesn't necessarily enable by force.
I've tried it and it does not work.

Stupid thing is, Asda mobile works fine, Three network works fine but not Smarty or ID.

It's something with IMS not being provisioned, gonna link you to my journey on O2.

Ah ok I've got a Xiaomi phone, I've got three and Asda and both worth fine with the overrides. I wonder why smarty and ID don't.

I have 2 more Xiaomi phones, lite 11 5g and mi 13 5g pro, both work.

Just the Redmi 8 that doesn't

Smarty didn’t do VoLTE on my RN8. Three did. That’s why i originally went to Three after smarty for a few years.

But that's the daft thing, my mum has my old RN8 on smarty and I called her the other day whilst she was on the coast with B20 only, no 3G and it was fine. Even got her to read the screen and she confirm it said 4G whilst on the call.

It's really bizarre and frankly annoying.

I'm trying to sort a phone for my dad who is with SMARTY who keeps breaking them, something inexpensive and easy to fix, was hoping to give him a spare RN8 but the damn thing just won't work.

You have done all the checks and are more technically capable than me but a few thoughts:

You say this one is an EU rom version. However I was under the impression that there were only two non-India models of the 8 Pro both labelled as Global. So are these phones exactly the same?

If it works on THREE then our assumption is that SMARTY should be the same. However I have been testing VoLTE on some old routers just to see if they work when set to 4G only (to prevent dropping to 2G/3G). I have found using different SIMs from the same provider that they can produce different results which is bizarre as well as confusing. I therefore do wonder if the SIM/Account is affecting the connection choices in some way?. Have you used your Mum's SIM in this actual phone?

Some VoLTE routers work and some don't so I also wonder whether as VoLTE functionality used to be restricted by IMEI number or range whether these are still being used within their IMS rather than just allowing any compatible VoLTE device to connect.
