XPON area vs GPON area?

Is there a way you can know if your area is XPON or GPON? Is it a case that if you live in certain areas regardless how recent your build was you have GPON? Or could there be some areas of the city with GPON and some newer builds with XPON?

I am in Newcastle with CityFibre and really want that 2.5GB/s Internet. But its annoying to hear I live in a GPON area so cannot get it. Is that for definite or is there any chance I could have XPON and not know it? How would you know if you did?

Is there any chance if you try and order 2.5GB/s it might force/convince CityFibre to upgrade your street with the newer technology during the install process or does it not work like that?

GPON areas will be able to get 2Gb speeds later this year with cityfibre but the uploads will be capped at 1Gb. You can tell wether you have XGS-PON by looking up the ONT you have installed online. Nothing on your street would have to be upgraded to get XGS-PON, only equipment in your house and the exchange needs to be upgraded.

Yayzi listed the areas that have it enabled. I believe this is the same list that A&A displayed too, so I don't really question it.
  • Blackpool
  • Great Yarmouth
  • Halifax
  • Havant
  • Loughborough
  • Luton
  • Middlesborough
  • Newark on Trent
  • Norwich
  • Nottingham
  • Rochdale
  • Rugby
  • Sheffield
  • St Helens
  • Sunderland
  • Swindon
  • Wellingborough
  • Wigan
  • York

If you're outside of those towns, you're not getting the 2.5Gbps service yet. The plan was to upgrade everything to XGS, so it's likely just a matter of time.

I'd say zero. You've just got to wait it out, unfortunately. If you did manage to get an order in somehow, it's just going to be cancelled.

CityFibre is running XGS and GPON in parallel, so yes, looking up your ONT will show which PON you're connected to currently, but it doesn't help identify if there's XGS alongside.

This is correct and probably your best upgrade path for now until you can upgrade again. A&A have some info on their Wiki.

Interesting to see that Rochdake has the 2.5Gb/s service enabled. I live in Rochdale and CF seem to be taking absolutely forever to get my area connected up. However, I will defo see about getting the 2.5Gb/s servce, helps a lot when working from home and doing data science jobs like I do.

I wonder what will happen to the (very small number of?) areas that CityFibre acquired from other operators? My area was originally built out by FibreNation (and it still says that on all the manhole covers etc) but is now a CityFibre area, and doesn't appear on this list. It was never activated before CF bought out FN, and it took ~3 years from the fibre in the ground (2020) to active and available-to-order service (summer 2023). Is there anything different about the ex-FibreNation areas?
