Yet another Graphics card request

Hi all.

A friend at church has had his GFX card die on him.

He wants a replacement, he says to "play the latest games" although I don't think he realises that the latest cards can cost £300.

I know it's an often asked question, but could you graphics card gurus supply some info as to recommended GFX cards. I'll be cheeky and say in the cheapo section, the £100 section and the "have to work overtime till next christmas" price section. I'm not sure of his budget.

Thanks in anticipation,

Froggy

Id say go for the radeon 9800 pro.

This card is very solid in terms of performance and reilability, and I think is the best about at the moment for value.

I'll have a look see and post some links when my brain works.

As far as I know, it *should* be around the £100 price mark, if not a bit over.

If your freind cannot go much over £100 then the 9600 pro/XT is the next best thing.

The ATI 9800 Pro tends to be +£25/50 above the £100 mark from normal retail, although you could no doubt do lower than £100 by hunting around eBay.

However, if you're not willing to dabble in online auctions then the 'Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800SE 128MB' comes in at £88.07 inc. VAT from Overclockers.co.uk (listed near the bottom):

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/9700_to_9800_Series.html

Listed near it is the 'OcUK ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB' for £135.07 inc. VAT. To be honest, spending that bit extra on the PRO is well worth it because it has twice the pipelines of the 9800 SE, which is a good thing ;) .

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. I appreciate your time and trouble.

I think I overestimated my mate's game-playing requirements, he was actually trying to replace a TNT 64MB card, I don't think he's into DOOM3 scene.

He ended up getting a Radeon 9550 256MB off eBay in his price range, not exactly cutting edge but it will wipe the floor with a TNT 64MB in comparison and the games that don't run will on that card.

He tried running the 9550 on his mobo, the fan worked but no signal. He put the TNT back in and that decided to work. Very odd. Then he checked his mobo and according to his understanding, the MOBO wont work with Radeons for some reason, just Nvidia. I dont know what mobo he is using. I'll find out.

I'm about to check the 9550 on my "stunt PC" (ie. expendable) to see if it works. My PC is running a 7500 so its happy with Radeons.

Thanks again and I'll post the results here. If nothing else, it will boost my average.

Well, his 9550 works fine. Must be his motherboard.
