ZTE Framework that converts a Three UK branded MF286d to Nordic B11

Sometimes the Frameworks do not work properly, I had a problem with Elisa to Nordic. I think your only option will be the serial port recovery unless you can make a connection via RJ45. Do you know what the router IP should be with Maxis? Maybe you can put a fixed IP with the same subnet on the PC interface that you use to connect to the ZTE.
Somehow when i checked once again after few hours the router is working (I can see web panel, wifi is working, and zte says "connected"). But after succesfull Nordic to Maxis flash it was still Nordic Version. When i tryied to change Nordic to Nordic + OpenWrt ZTE app says invalid version or something like that. So i tryied Maxis to Nordic and it works!

Good News!

Hi @meritez, just spent the last hour reading this thread, getting to the end and then forgetting what happened at the start! 😆

I have a MF286D running stock as far as I know (will check when home in a few hours) and would like to get onto the latest Nordic version and onto the latest modem version.

What is the most up to date way to do this please? Is it possible to link to each step?

I saw a lot of talk of Modem B02 during the thread then towards the end noticed a B07 update, so no sure if that changes things?

I'm currently using a Smarty SIM in mine have 2 masts close by, one is very close that uses just Band 3 and another slightly further away in the other direction that uses 1, 3, 20 and 28.

Just want to try and squeeze more speed and reliability out of the unit if possible.

Question, what firmware is on your mf286d at present?
three uk firmware to openwrt is here:

just updated the link on the first page to the current mega folder.
This would probably do the best for you:

Thank you for the quick response. I will have to double check the current firmware when im home in a couple of hours.

Assuming im ok to update, are you saying follow the link on your first post, or use the mega you just posted? Followed by the upgrade on your second link?

Current software is CR_H3GGBMF286DV1.0.0B08

Is there a simple way to install Openwrt from CR_H3GGBMF286DV1.0.0B08 ?
I tried Three to Openwrt zte mf286d 192.168.1.1 pw --- and Play to Nordic zte mf286d 192.168.32.1 pw --- with no luck
Thanks

You will probably need to switch to Nordic first then use "MF286D_Play_to_Nordic--Nordic_to_Nordic_Framework+OpenWrt"

There's someone else on the Openwrt forums having the same issue and they have had to purchase a cp2102 for the serial headers.

I thought I'd drop a quick note on my experience with the MF286D.

I'm currently on VDSL providing 60/15 mbps. Not terrible, not great. With FTTP a little way off I wondered about faster/more flexible alternatives in the short term.

Vodafone/O2 installed a 4G mast locally a couple of years back and I never thought much about it, other than now getting epic signal in the house. It turns out the mast is VERY lightly loaded, consistently providing 180-150 / 30-40 mbps depending on the time of day. Vodafone uses 15 MHz @ 2100 (B1) and 10 MHz @ 800 (B20). I get -70dBm in the attic.

I bumped into this thread searching for a cheap/decent LTE router, bought an immaculate "Grade C" unlocked example with Nordic firmware on eBay, then spent a morning flashing to OpenWRT with the ZTE framework and updating the modem firmware to B12.

An interesting issue I ran into on the latest 4IceG OpenWRT build was the download speed topped out at 110 mbps. This was very consistent and looked like some kind of rate limit being applied. I couldn't see anything obviously causing this. I also couldn't install SQM because the 4IceG build is based on a snapshot and the kernel has moved on for the current snapshot of SQM. They need to match exactly it would seem.

Installing 23.05 over the top, retaining the configuration, fixed both issues. I then reinstalled the various 4IceG's repo packages for modem/LED management.

With SQM enabled the connection initially maxed out at 120 mbps, which increased to 150+ mbps enabling irqbalance. I'm sure it could be tweaked further but I'll take that.

So I now have an infinitely configurable, latency optimised 150/30 connection, built on a £40 Three branded Chinese box, costing me far less per month that I was paying before. Nice.

The built in WiFi throughput leaves a lot to be desired, but the router will be serving an U6 Pro WAP so this is not a concern.

Along the way I seem to have bumped into all the same issues/inconsistencies others have mentioned. Many thanks to meritez for his expert pointers/MEGA links. An idiot's guide would have been ideal, but there was just enough information to succeed.

Good post @jmw , I also ran into issues with 4IceG's build alas, installing the latest upstream sorted all my issues and the router is very stable.

I'm thinking of getting another one, clusterise them or just keep it as backup.

I hope this is not too off-topic but I have managed to flash openwrt to my 286d (Three router) and I'm trying to upgrade the modem firmware in the hope that it will fix an issue with QMI not being able to start the netowrk.

My modem firmware version is 07 and the modem firmware upgrade Mega link doesn't have a patch for the 07. Has anyone come across a patch for this version or know if one of the patches will still work?
