ZTE MC7010 changed DNS now can't reach configuration page at default IP address

I've been having problems with slow internet and lots of DNS related messages in browsers like "DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN",

So I changed the APN settings to manual and set the DNS manually to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8, instead of recieving it automatically via Vodafone.

After that, not only do I not have any internet, but I can't reach the MC7010 default configuration page at 192.168.254.1 to change the APN back to automatic.

I've tried powering on an off a few times, bit still can't reach it

Anybody got any ideas?

Reset to factory and try again, this time more carefully.

..and by "more carefully", you mean...what exactly?
That you are double checking what you are changing. Maybe share a few screenshots here, last I checked the APN settings had nothing to do with DNS for example.

As far as I know, the only place to override the ISP assigned DNS is the APN settings, unless you know somewhere else?

DNS is usually received via DHCP _after_ the APN has been authenticated.

That's exactly the point. I don't want the ISP assigned DNS. I want to use Google and Cloud flare DNS 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1. That's what the "DNS mode: manual" is for, right?

I don't know this router at all, it sounds roughly what you need indeed, but the fact you lose access to it raises loads of questions. There's got to be some more going on there.

If you are behind Vodafone CGNAT, then you are going to be denied due to vodafone's webfiltering service.

Have you got all restrictions lifted, as Vodafone like to force you to use their DNS for filtering purposes, so you may need to ask for the content lock to be removed.

The only content restriction from Lebara is age verification. Is that what you mean?

They seemed to think that was all they can do

The modem automatically detects them as pp.vodafone.co.uk, Authentication PAP, username web, pw web. I tried also with wap.vodafone.co.uk, Authentication none, wap, wap

Does your laptop obtain an IP address from the router.

I agree with others that changing the DNS should not break functionality in the LAN.

Can your laptop ping 192.168.254.1 when management page jnaccessible?

How are you able to change the APN without access to the management page? Factory reset?

If changing DNS truly breaks router, why not change DNS on laptop and devices instead?

Some do via DHCP, other are fixed

No

Yes

Indeed that does work for some devices, but it's not practical for all the 100+ devices on the LAN

Could be worth a screenshot of the DNS and APN config part of the router. If you believe the router firmware is faulty because changing something benign breaks the LAN, it would be worth consulting with the manufacturer's commercial support to see if there's an obvious fix or a new firmware version.

Are the error messages in the browser confirmed by a manual "nslookup" when using the ISP's DNS?

Not to insult, but is that the correct IP address for the router?
Usually something like 192.168.1.254 and not 192.168.254.1.
Can check on a laptop that has connected and got an IP address from the router. The gateway IP address should be that of the router. Confirm that is the same or different. If it is different, try that IP address in a web browser.
Can share with us IP settings on the laptop? We can just verify the IP received sits in the same network as the gateway.
