ZTE MC801A Review

Back here again, as my internet has gone from bad to worse. I know lots of people tried downgrading the firmware of the device, has anyone tried downgrading to view an older web version of the gui? Notice thats on B11, which downgrading that may allow the cell lock and 5g band lock via java script to work? Just an idea (probably a stupid one).

Anyone know if its possible to lock the 5ghz wifi channel to 80mhz only?

The channel bandwidth page only seems to allow all 3? (20/40/80). Trying to rule out wifi issues on my Quest 3, as for some reason, it just keels over bigtime when I try Virtual Desktop or Airlink and it goes above 40mbps as a connection to my pc, yet I can stream eg 80gb videos across the net fine

Mine disconnects often, sometimes not for days and days, then like yesterday disconnected numerous times over a 1 hour period.
I've no idea how or when it will happen, but it always reconnects after a few minutes luckily, unlike the previous Zyxel NR5103E which wouldn't reconnect till it was switched off then on again.
Thanks. I'm still experiencing the same issue and disconnections around 11-13hours every single day.

I have tried to read like first 30 pages on here trying to see what else I could check. From what I've read I think my router's rebooting because there's no 5g signal so I have to manually reconnect every time it reboots since i'm not using a 3 sim. The logs stretches out to like 30 minutes so it doesn't help much. I tried to check cell mapper and there's a cell site near me, (0.1 mi), it's an LTE tower and honestly I don't know much about what to do with this info. Living on a bungalow with two storey apartments around me so Idk if it's that's got to do with how bad my aerial is, if the signals are blocked off.

I have really bad connection from where I am (low signal strength, very poor SINR), have tried every space in the house, outside best I could do is -100dbm and 10dB. I have tried all the networks and only EE is working for me. In my iPhone which I originally used as a hotspot I'm getting a full bar signal strength inside the house, never dropped speeds or encountered this issue. So I went ahead and bought this router but my signal's just at 1 bar using this. I have tried switching it to 4G for now just to see if I'll still have dropouts since my 4G signal is better but definitely defeats the purpose of having a 5G router. It's a shame because when it works, it's great but when it doesn't....

I'm thinking of swapping this out for Huawei CPE Pro from CeX, atleast it's not locked and hopefully I don't have to manually connect it every single time it reboots because it's not locked to a carrier and that the disruption is minimal. Worried I'll just face the same issue because of signal strength and that 5g routers might not be for me right now. Maybe I'll try out antenna's if it's possible or I'll just scratch it and just go back to my iPhone hotspot. I just really need something that works and is stable.

Any suggestions gladly welcome. Thank you

Hello everyone

As i wrote pages ago, i have a mc81a Tmobile Deutsche Telecom, woking fine 24h/24h on 5G CA (n28+1+3+20)

Can i connect this antenna?

Poynting XPOL-2-5G

I wanted to connect to another cell far from where i live, where there is more speed and the n78 band

Morning all,

Has anyone had this router randomly reboot when doing a speedtest? I've had it happen about 3 times so far throughout ownership (had for about 18 months so its not a massive issue)?

Ive got TP-Link Deco S4 AC1200 connected to it.

Also, is there any way to view the logs on the router? I've tried to get to the URLs in this thread but they dont seem to go anywhere.

thanks,
Dave

just for your information..

Yettel MC801A is newer hardware like DE-TMOBILE (an may be also H3G UK unit). Firmware seems to be interchangeable

If someone want to "donate" an H3G UK unit, I can trying to port this firmware on it. It's very recent, like August 2023 and could have this nice "Network Information" Page (i need to recreate some js\html pages, but needs a unit..):

Just an update, thanks to @bon I got H3G Uk dump and unfortunately it doesn’t work on DE-TMO version (where Yettel Works). Layout identical to MC7010D..

Hi friend,

what do you think about the MC801 vs MC888 and Zyxel 5103E?

Some people tell that MC801 it's superior to 888 and other that Zyxel 5103E it's better respect to ZTE.

Your test?

I had the ZTE MC801A Progetto5G, for me the Zyxel 5103E was slightly faster but nothing major.

Think it's safe to say they are pretty much the same speed wise to be honest.

There he is above in the router corner with his CPE Pro 2 friend in the olden days.😁

I read a lot about MC801 and 888 and a lot of people found several bug on the 888... i think that i will go with the Zyxel as you suggested.

Do you have a maximum uptime in day of the Zyxel? Thanks!

The 5 routers never disconnect at all, but I just had a wee look and the winner at the moment is Vodafone at 75 days. 😁

You receive the firmware update using another sim?
No, it has to have a three, Smarty or ID Mobile SIM inserted to get firmware updates.

I've heard it said that the MC801A can get a 5G signal when the NR5103E does not but I don't have both to get a comparison. The ZTE might be worth considering if your 5G signal is borderline..
My Moto Edge 20 Lite phone can only occasionally get a 5G signal when upstairs but my MC801A (I have two) can get solid 5G upstairs and down. Download speeds are similar upstairs and down but upstairs gives faster uploads. 5G RSRP is about -82db upstairs and -98db downstairs. The mast, a monopole, is just under 700 meters away with no line of sight.
The routers are cell-locked to B1.

My second ZTE router has now failed.
Ethernet ports have stopped working
"3" Have said I will get a replacement in 10 working days

WHAT?

Hello all. I've been following this thread for quite a while now.

I can't seem to open any port.
I've tried
  1. http://192.168.0.1/index.html#port_forward
  2. Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security
  3. Third party firewall.
  4. Rebooting my pc/router after adding port
Still can't seem to open any port after checking using port checker sites

System o/s = Windows 10
Software version = BD_UKH3GMC801AV1.0.0B15
Hardware version = MC801AHW-1.0.0

Any ideas?

Hi all,

I've noticed my router with a Three sim seems to have updated firmware to BD_UKH3GMC801AV1.0.0B15, or at least something's changed, because now when I try and set a 5G cell lock using the JS script, it says "Error the modem didn't like it!" and doesn't set.

I had one set because the auto select picks a further mast with worse signal, but my 5G dropped so I assumed the locked-on mast was down. I reset the router to unlock, but I have seen it briefly connect to the better closer mast so not sure why it dropped.

Now after reset I can't lock it anymore. I haven't monitored it in a while, so the lock may have been disabled a while ago by an update, or it may have been related to reset somehow.

Anyone else on this FW version got the same issue? Is it possible to downgrade a Three unit?

Thanks for reading
