ZTE MC801A Review

Hi all,

I've noticed my router with a Three sim seems to have updated firmware to BD_UKH3GMC801AV1.0.0B15, or at least something's changed, because now when I try and set a 5G cell lock using the JS script, it says "Error the modem didn't like it!" and doesn't set.

I had one set because the auto select picks a further mast with worse signal, but my 5G dropped so I assumed the locked-on mast was down. I reset the router to unlock, but I have seen it briefly connect to the better closer mast so not sure why it dropped.

Now after reset I can't lock it anymore. I haven't monitored it in a while, so the lock may have been disabled a while ago by an update, or it may have been related to reset somehow.

Anyone else on this FW version got the same issue? Is it possible to downgrade a Three unit?

Thanks for reading
5G cell lock? This lock works only on 5G SA network, not on NSA..

Anyway may be they have removed some API, but very strange. On his outdoor brother (MC7010) the NR-LOCK is working also on latest version, I mean the submit information, obviously without SA network is useless

Oh haha I must have just got lucky that it stayed on the closer tower after I submitted the lock info. No idea why it fixates on the worse mast but I've seen other people have the same experience with this router

On Three's network with MC801A is it possible to lock onto 4G cells? And theoretically select the 5G cell that way? Or does 5G cell selection not follow the selected 4G cell?

Yes it is possible to lock to a 4G cell and 5G will follow if available. 4G CA will also follow if available.
I lock to B1 and get CA B1+B3+B28+N78
Overnight, B28 is parked presumably to save energy and B20 gets aggregated instead.
I can also lock to another tower's B1 which gives CA B1+B3+N78 with the N78 cross linked from another tower.

Hello guys, I'm new here, and I need help with the mc801a. I'm on firmware: bd_liveukmc801av1.0.0b01, but i have problems with port forwarding. Hi guys!

My T-Mobile Germany device is bricked. I installed first the Finnish Elisa B4 and then the UK three B15 firmware on my mc801a. Although the label of the device says mc801a, T-mobile Germany devices only work with the Mc801a1 version firmware. However, my device does not receive any signal. Can forum friends share the qcn file of MC801a1? If you wish, I can share the mc801a v1 firmware with you.

The only person known on this forum who has working firmware for the T-Mobile boxes is @USER@555 who occasionally posts here. It is not publicly available. I was able to recover my bricked MC801A with his/her help. I contacted by PM. The firmware is locked to version B06.

As of a few days ago, I have not been able to use my EE sim with the router - network light is showing red. Sim is working in other devices such as a phone. I have seen a few others note this problem but haven't seen anyone post about a fix - my IMEI doesn't seem to be blacklisted, is there anything I can do? The router is 3 branded, has been working fine until now

I’ve also ;)
And my FW is more fresh and unlock VoLTE :)

My ZTE801a is still rebooting at the most awkward moments.
It's located in lounge window, so if it happens when I'm in lounge I just pull the power cable out then straight back in, and within a minute I'm back up and running.
When I'm upstairs in back bedroom on computer it's a different matter.
I've read posts saying they reboot from phone, how is that possible if WiFi drops?
I've thought and looked at Bluetooth smart plugs but they are way more expensive than WiFi ones, but would work to reset router when WiFi drops.
Thoughts appreciated 👍

Change your adapter to at least 12v 3a.

Interesting, I haven't read anything about that before.
I've just checked and the original ZTE adapter I use is 12v 1.5a.
Are you suggesting the cut outs may be due to insufficient power delivery?
Thank you.
