ZTE MC801A Review

Hi All,

I have one of these unlocked and using on Vodafone. When I first got it, it would lock onto 5G no problem.

Nowadays it never gets 5G, even after factory resets etc, despite my iPhone sat in the same room actively getting 5G signal. I bought this second hand off ebay, it's locked to the b12 three firmware and doesn't even update when a three sim is in it.

Does this just sound like it's gone dodgy and I should try something else?

A bit complicated but to test it out. On your iPhone phone app enter field test mode *3001#12345#*. Then use cellmapper to ascertain the mast.

Then use the hack to cell lock it to the mast. At first you can try and force the bands, if that doesn't work then try cell lock. To remove a cell lock a reset is required. It's what I use to do when I was on three to secure a 5G connection as auto mode was terrible.

Need to log into the router on chrome, go to developer tools and paste the code. It will unlock hidden features.

Thanks.

Do I use the script to get the hidden menu's up and then use the menu's to lock it, or must I modify the script with values I need?

Modify on the menus when it loads up. Nothing to amend in the script.
Thanks, managed to get on and for some reason when I try to lock it to the 5G pci/eafrcn of the 5G mast I just get 'modem didn't like that' and it doesn't work.

I did actually manage to get it to connect by hanging it out the window so I guess it's just an antenna/weak signal problem and I might have to get something that can take an external antenna.

My Phone also jumps from about 150Mbps down to 500Mbps down on 5G when I hold it out the window.

Positioning affects these routers quite a bit. I'm on Voxi now and whilst I had the 801a before I returned it it just would not connect to 5g whether automatically or via cell locking.

I've since purchased the Zyxel and it connects to 5g automatically. 5g is non existent where I reside but it managed to catch the back of a mast albeit with poor speeds. I think it's internal modem might be slightly better and does allow external antenna.

There's no true 5g here anyway it's all NSA but the fact it could connect in the first place over the MCA in the same position was surprising.

Hi everyone! Just got one of these for super cheap and I'm happy with it overall but I can't access the hidden debug menu. Everytime I try and access it via URL change or by using the JavaScript, it just refreshes back to the home screen. Is there any way of me accessing it as I'm trying to get the VOIP working on it and I heard there is supposed to be a toggle in the debug menu.

It's a Three branded version with B17 firmware

The debug / hidden menus were disabled in a firmware update about 2 years ago.

Do you have a loft? ;)
