ZTE MC888 expriments

@stich86 , is it easy to find the MC888A X65 version?

The closest in the UK I could find was the Livewire version, but I seriously doubt this has the X65 modem.

"A" variant has for sure X65 :)

I've checked an MC888A from A1, and ca-combos report 200Mhz of BW on NR-CA ;)

Oh my word...that X65 modem is indeed magic.

I'm assuming A1 don't sell the MC888A on its own and they will not ship to the UK.

Any idea who is selling this router online?

You can search for MC888A (not ultra) here: https://www.willhaben.at/

If you pay extra shipping for it, you will find for sure a user that want to sell it :)

An 888A can be get for at least 170€

AFAIK Ultra variant with X65 (MC888A Ultra) is only available on Asian Market (UAE or China). But it’s not worth of money..

Looks like Gigacube Dutch

I currently have dump of MC888U VF Italy and Livewire UK, but not sure that swap sysfs and NON-HLOS can work. Don’t have a unit to pay with it.. sorry
Thank you for info. Yes, my Wifi calle Gigacube also. So probably its matches.
However, can you please share links to dumps you have?

Sorry cannot to because inside there is the IMEI of the person who had it in production

Anyway without firehose loader are useless

For the moment I don’t want to share the loader and want keep scene calm.
Too many “bad” people wants to earn money on this, and I don’t like this behavior without sharing of knowledge :)

I don't have any intention to earn money. However, how else then we as people can get loader? If it's not a money, then what?

(I hope this is a reasonable place to ask, I didn't like to start a new thread...)

I just bought an MC888 from CEX. It's supposed to be unlocked but it has a Three logo on it, so I'm guessing it might have been locked to them at some point. I'd like to confirm it's unlocked. Is there any way to check this without using a SIM from another network?

The software version is BD_H3GUKMC888V1.0.0B02 and the hardware version is MC888HWV1.0.0.

Is there a full user manual available? I can only find the basic "Let's go"/quick start guide on the web and that's all that came in the box too.

A bonus question now I've played around with it a bit more: Is there any way I can tell the damn thing that I know what I'm doing and to allow me to set a wifi password which doesn't include the magic secret security sauce of an upper case character and a special symbol? My (long) wifi password which I've been using for years doesn't have them, and unless I can put my existing password in I am going to have to go change the password on all of my miscellaneous wifi-connected gadgets.

Thanks.

just for information.. is carrier aggregation working on your unit after this upgrade?

Lots of people here in Italy receveid this update (Amazon sell this unit as "no-brand" here..), and CA has stopped working. Wants to understand if they have put a CA prune just for UK operators or it's a usual bug from ZTE

Let me know if you can/want, as I don't have this device anymore :)

Only way is to put a SIM card that's not Three mobile, if at reboot is asking an "Unlock Code" is sim-locked :)

Thanks stich86. That's a bit of a shame as the only non-Three SIMs I have are ones are PAYG with no affordable data at all (they're for phones I don't use much but want to keep alive) and if I stick one in the 5G router it's probably going to burn through all my credit just doing a check for firmware updates or something. Still, at least I know it's an option. Maybe I can set a PIN lock on one of these non-Three SIMs and see whether the router asks me for the SIM PIN or a network unlock code, I will have to experiment.

Just had that same update on mine and CA has stopped working. I rang ZTE this morning and they said they’d look into it.

ZTE has verified the existence of the CA problem and they are now distributing an update with the old B04 version.

Hi!

I have a ZTE MC888, a South African version branded by Rain ISP, with firmware version BD_RAINZAMC888V1.0.0B06. The 5G has stopped working, and I'm suspecting a firwmare problem. It's just driving me crazy.

@stich86 would it be possible for you to send me the dump/root procedure so I can poke around the firmware for a possible solution? I don't have the rights to PM you... I can then share the dump if needed.

Thanks!
Hi Squeck. I was just wondering why don't you just buy another one on FB marketplace then I can unlock it for you, rather that than struggle with FW?

TL;DR: I think specifying an EARFCN of 10220 in the cell lock for an MC888 causes it to lock up on power up if the SIM is present, and you have to factory reset to fix this. This is with firmware BD_H3GUKMC888V1.0.0B02. The unit is supposedly unlocked but I haven't been able to test that.

I've been having some trouble with my new SMARTY 5G - it worked great for the first couple of days, then downgraded to *really* slow 4G (<2Mbit/s download), so I started playing around with band and cell locking. I have been able to get decent 5G speeds with cell locking, though I'd like to see the "default" connection start working on 5G again - no idea if it's the router or Three as I have no other 5G device to test with.

Anyway I was playing around with some different cell locks and I put in an EARFCN of 10220 (band 32), because why not? I actually knew that this was a downlink only band (according to Mast Database anyway) and thus probably not sensible to specify for the cell lock, but I thought I'd try anyway. Normally I just get limited service/red network light when I use a bad PCI/EARFCN combination. I clicked apply and then restart and the router restarted, the power light came on for a few seconds and then all the lights went off including the power light and I couldn't connect to the web GUI either.

I tried physically disconnecting the power cord and reconnecting it and it did the same thing - white power light for a few seconds, then apparently dead.

I took the SIM out and it would then start up and let me into the web GUI, but I couldn't alter the cell lock as the network debug screen wouldn't come up without a SIM. I tried inserting the SIM while the router was powered on but it did the same "all lights go out" thing.

I was able to fix this by restarting without the SIM and doing a factory reset from the web GUI, but it was squeaky bum time there for a while.

I have not tried to reproduce this, but I thought it might be of interest. No responsibility taken if you brick your device experimenting with this of course.
