ZTE MF286D

I can't say i've had that issue. Only issue i've had is DNS issues. There is another person from another forum that has my issue and believes that the router is "soft" locked to Three, if you will. You can use any sim but if it isn't a Three sim then you'll have DNS issues. I don't have another device to bridge but you can circumvent it by changing DNS manually on each device. We both use EE, or in my case UW. Can't say if it happens with o2 or Vodafone.

Registered the forum just for being a new user of mf286d.

I too have the same issue of dns. apart from that, it gives me 120Mb dl and 30Mb ul speed which is much better than my old huawei b311 (70Mb/20Mb).

I assume mf286d has done some band aggregation(can't tell from UI) to get a higher speed.

I do have a Poynting 4G-XPOL-A0001 antenna connected. and it has some improvement but mainly for upload speed.

I'm switching back to Huawei b311 now because of the dns issue and b311 provides a better parent control function. to be honest b311 has been rock solid for the last two years.

Would be interested to know if it can be debranded with another firmware.

If you are connected to 2 or more bands the device shows LTE +, otherwise it will show just LTE

I believe it is possible but it will require a usb-ttl adapter.

A quote from fibra forum to myself

"Correct. First install a serial usb-ttl adapter to X8 connection, then make a backup of all mtd partitions, then from uboot flash the TIM software"

And the guide to do it.

I'm a novice at this stuff and it made no sense to me.

how did you connect the antenna, given the way the SMA connectors are supposed to be used (Band 7/38 on one, the rest on the other)?

will require a usb-ttl adapter.
I am trying out different USB-TTL adapters at the moment, still having some problems getting sensible output...

This dns issue, I think I need to read into that a bit more however I shouldn’t be affected as mine is running in bridge mode via a pfsense firewall.
What I have found though is I seem to get massive packet loss at pretty much any time there is any load on the connection which is something my old 535 didn’t do. I am trying to get some time to spend to investigate this however I’m a little disappointed this is happening to say the least

You may have some luck asking Marcin on the Fibra forums. He might have done the procedure but the language barrier complicates things. And i've had no response from MiG25 on the eko forums. I wouldn't know what to ask in regards to the USB TTL adapter but he may point you in the right direction

Nothing special. the antenna has two cables with male sma. each of them just simply connects to the female sma on the back of the router. I understand you can open the case and connect them to the pci card directly. but i'm not bothered until the dns issue can be solved or it can be debranded

Are you using CA on the b535 or just a single band?

is there a pin map for solding usb ttl adapters?

I'd suggest having a read through this thread
There is some technical talk about this stuff. This for example
a lot to read.

btw do you have the link to buy it for £29? just in case i brick it

I don't think i can link Three basket but here is a screenshot. Just click the device after you input your postcode and click the 1 month plan. I'm not sure if you have to pay the £30 unlimited sim upfront but you can probably get around it.

If Three 4g broadband isn't available, use a random postcode that is or use this link.

I've got a usb ttl cable from my openwrt/dd wrt flashing days so i'd be interested to see how you get on. I've read that thread over and I also concurr with the advice given, it doesnt sound like solid connections. I had a similar sort of thing when reflashing my boss' old "broken" netgear orbi system.
It sounds like you are nearly there with access to uboot so perhaps a reflash wont be too far away. I currently and trying to deal with packet loss issues before I attempt anything else more indepth.

CA, or was. I no longer have the 535
Oh right. Ever since three made b20 the main band instead of b3 (in my area, at least) while aggregating both have caused me similar problems. Latency shoots through the roof, massive packet loss. This happens on my b535 and 286D while CA is active. Luckily i can control what band to choose on the b535, otherwise Three would be even more useless as of late

It might be that, however the b535 did something I suppose sort of similar when under load but no where near as bad as what the ZTE does. However so far running traffic limiters with codelQ etc seems to help but as everyone knows how can you set QOS bandwidth limits for a constantly variable connection unless you massively dial it back to a "safe" area which invaribly will be sub par speeds?

But anyway, i've taken the ZTE to bits and going to see if can get anything from its serial console pins as i've just soldered some pins on.

well that gets me into a pretty standard uboot type affair. it wouldnt surprise me if this was running openwrt or a variant of it anyway

Performance tanks for me as well with 20 as the main band, i now have to wait 5 minutes after powering on my router so that it can switch to band 3 only.

it does

Code:
ARM OpenWrt Linux-3.14.77
...
ARM OpenWrt qcom-ipq40xx-ap.dkxx device tree blob

I got the serial to work and it shows the boot messages, but after "starting kernel" I get just rubbish.

I am using a HL-340 USB-Serial adapter, also tried a PL2303 Serial Port but don't get any output with the latter
