Zyxel NR5103E - Just bought one

Hi all,

Just wanted to say many thanks for people's post in this forum as it's helped me decide which 5G router to go for. I'm moving to an area in the next couple of months that has pretty quick 5G (I get about 450meg on my Pixel 7 in the house).

I've just bought a Zyxel NR5103E from CEX for £110 which looks a good deal. Hopefully it will work fine and save me having to get a broadband line installed (I may not be in the house for more than 6 months and all the fixed lines seem to want a 24 month contract these days).

I've bought an unlimited Smarty 5G sim card for £15 a month (it's a guaranteed price for 15 months apparently).

If anyone has any tips about how to lock on to certain 5g brands etc. I would be most grateful to hear them.

Thanks again for the help so far.

Edit - Forgot to mention, if anyone has tips to get past CGNAT for things like IP cameras that would be great. I already use Tailscale to get to a QNAP NAS in another house which works great.

Great, thanks Steve, that's the sort of thing I was looking for. It looks very informative and explanatory. Cheers.

The cgnat issue try using 3internet app instead of three.co.uk or what ever it sets, you should get a proper ip address from that apn.

Hi AshOnFire1989, I did try that but still got a CGNAT address. Maybe it is a Smarty thing that you always get CGNAT?

My NR5103E finally arrived today. Just in a cardboard box, no instructions, nothing. Fortunately the router is in great condition and it does hold onto a 5G signal so that's great. I've set it up with IP Passthrough and that seems to work great (my normal router seems to default to use VLAN 91 and I have to blank that out for it to connect).

Happy days so far.

Did you get the original soap dispenser or its baby peteb999?
Just being nosey. 😊
Glad you're having success with it. (y)

Hi The Wee Bear.
It's the original soap dispenser, haha. I think I read your post that said the V2 was a bit of a cost cutting exercise so I went for the original. I was a bit concerned about having a CGNAT address, but I installed TAILSCALE on my router and that has got me round it.

I'm very impressed, especially for the Smarty SIM card price. Up to now I've been paying for a 900Mbps up/down where I currently live so it's going to save me quite a bit.

I read the whole of the NR103E thread while I was waiting for it to come and have seen the millions of your useful replies so thanks for that.

Oh that's great, yes I think that's all the V2 was, just to save Three some pennies. 😊

You're a glutton for punishment reading through that lot, but glad you found something of interest.

I hope you enjoy your new soap dispenser.(y)

Just a quick question. Is there a way to find out how much data I have used?

Hi peteb999, there is, but it's not very user friendly unfortunately. :(
After logging into the UI....

Top right hamburger menu / System Monitor / Traffic Status

It's pretty basic and has no reset per month option. :(

Hello, I bought a zyxel nr5103e second hand. I can't get 5G at all, and there is 5G at the location. I change the bands to n78, n20, n8, on any of them to put 5G is dead. 4G works normally, but 5G not at all. Is this a problem that can be solved with new firmware? The current firmware is V1.00(ACDJ.1)b3_D0.

How do I fix it?

The current original APN is bredband.tre.se. I changed it but nothing changes. Can someone help me. Where to get new fremwear. I contacted zyxel support, no one answers, they send some robotic automatic message, just to get rid of me and that's it. Thanks for the help.

Hi Iam, welcome along to the forums. (y)

A while back there was a faulty batch of NR5103E routers, the problem with these routers was they wouldn't connect to 5G at all, I hope you haven't received one of those.

The latest firmware is V1.00(ACBJ.0)b15

I have never seen any firmware available for download though, you usually have to update it using a three SIM, although some users have reported it updated via a non Three SIM.

If you're using it on the Three UK network, the APN should be either 3internet or three.co.uk

Yeah it's probably a faulty one, I spent an hour messing around with mine before searching this forum and finding out there was a dodgy batch. I had 2 SIMS where I easily got a 5G connection on my phone but failed to do so on the Zyxel in the same location.

Thank you for the kind words of the well-wisher. I live in Croatia. I have a Tcom sim card. So I won't be able to do anything. It is in the zyxel menu that it will insert the firmware file manually. It automatically tells me that it is the latest version. What should I do? Thank you very much.

Not sure Iam, as I said, I've never seen any firmware files for any country available for the NR5103E, updating usually has to be done over an Internet connection, not sure what to suggest, is it not possible to replace the router to make sure it's not a faulty one?
