Zyxel NR5103EV2 vs ZTE MC888 Ultra

Hello all,

New to this forum, trying to figure out a new 5G modem gateway which suits my needs.
  • Live in a low signal area, with preference to use 5G only (better data plans)
  • Have used Oppo T1a 5G CPE in the past for some time, it would latch on to n28 with SINR between -5 to 5 and RSRP of -110 to -95... I might have used incorrect terminology here
  • Whenever it would connect to n78, the speed and latency was decent enough
  • Now looking for router with band locking to n78 and (if possible) cell locking features
Considering following, but not all are easy to obtain
  • Suncomm SE06
  • ZLT X28 (Max? / V Pro?)
  • Zyxel NR5103EV2 + 2 small indoor antennas
  • ZTE MC888 Ultra
Which option would be better in this case?

Thank you

Yes to both questions. The MC888* for instance uses n28 + n78 e.g. in conjunction with O2 Germany and so does the Mikrotik Chateau R16 with its newer Quectel RM520F-GL modem.

* it however doesn't display it in the regular GUI but only via the optional browser script.

I've had the Suncomm SE06 Pro Max for a while but eventually decided to return it. Mainly because of random connection drops which I don't have with the ZTE MC888 (which has other quirks though) but also since the terrible crippled down and outdated LEDE/OpenWrt didn't passthrough the /64 network for me. While I got it working with Android systems by fiddling around with the config files thanks to telnet access to this thing, I didn't for OSX and Windows. By default, one has stupid NAT66.

Suncomm's service is very good in terms of replying behaviour but it's also a typical Chinese company with mediocre trained stuff. No idea about economy or customs, technical details of their own products, etc. flavoured with bad English.

Of course, that NAT for IPV6 topic needed several explanation rounds until someone halfway knew what I meant.

On the pro side, with the built-in Quectel RM521F-EU, I got 4CA LTE & 2CA 5G, the record so far* in terms of carrier aggregation for me.

* the MC888A which I was able to test today, also reaches 4CA LTE + 2CA 5G.

Would Zyxel NR5103EV2 also be capable of n28 + n78 (perhaps with the help of a script)?

Thank you for the reply

That's a good question and I'm honestly not sure as back when I had it, O2 Germany, which I mostly use due to the attractive price level despite its drawbacks, might not even have featured 5G CA yet, as so far, I was used to witness 4CA LTE + one 5G band only.

The first router where I even noticed that CA is already possible and offered by providers in Germany was indeed the MC888 (SDX62).

Despite its own quirks which I confirmed here, you might want to (also) try the MC888A (not to be confused with the MC888, so note the package!) as it is relatively cheap (<200€) and even has the relatively SDX65 chipset which is certainly above what Zyxel uses with the Mediatek M700.
