Zyxel NR5103EV2 with o2 simcard - low speeds

Hello,

Yesterday I bought the Zyxel NE5103EV2 router from CeX to use as our primary internet device at home. I have an unlimited data sim from o2 and I live 300 meters away from one of their masts.

When I checked o2 speeds in my phone I could see around 100 mbps on 4g+ and around 180 on 5g indoors. However, when I inserted the SIM card into the Zyxel router all I got was 4mbps or 30 if I changed the setup to 4g only. Oddly enough, upload speeds were always consistent at 30mpbs.

I tried disabling IPV6, manually changing the APN, using only some bands and rebooting the device but nothing worked. Am I missing something or do you think the device is faulty and should be returned?

Many thanks!

Is it connecting to 5G? Both icons on the top going blue?

Have you tried the router in various locations. Ideally a window with line of sight, or move it around a bit and see if that works.

Hi Carl0, many thanks for your quick reply!

I tried placing the router near several windows, including one that is closer to the mast but without any luck. The router is also connected to 5g with the 2 blue lights and I can see it has got in the web settings systems all bars for LTE strength and 3 for 5g. Do you think it could have something to do with using an o2 SIM card?

Have you gone into the band lock settings and selected n78 only? For the "n" bands, untick them all and make sure only n78 is ticked.

For 4G bands, I'd keep them all ticked for now. You can experiment with them later by checking Cellmapper and seeing the masts near you and what bands they broadcast.

You can see what it's using under Cellular Info > Service Information. Share a screenshot of that and we can go from there. It will show what cell it's connected to (the location of that tower) so just be aware of that.

I don't use O2 direct but Tesco Mobile (O2 MVNO) instead. It works brilliantly with 200Mbps+ speeds. I'd assume O2 would be the same unless they really are throttling somehow.
