At this stage it should be pointed out that 3G standards (UTMS etc.) are named differently around the world and that speeds and functionality vary from place to place. As such the data above may not be completely UK specific, not that there'd be much variance.

On top of the heavy costs there's also the devices themselves, any new technology needs hardware and software to take advantage of it. Modern day PocketPCs (Microsoft) give a good insight into what future 3G mobile phones will look like. Colourful screens, easy navigation, multimedia, games and Internet browsing functions all make up such devices, in the future they'll be more closely merged with mobile phones for true portability.

An example of Microsofts latest 'Stinger Sendo' concept phone is shown below along with some interface screens. Note that the product itself is actually being designed for 2.5G and not 3G, although it gives you an idea of what to expect:

Overall the future of mobile communications is bound to be more colourful and attractive than it is today. However issues over health, compatibility, costs and power consumption are also likely to become the all to common drawbacks, ultimately only time will tell.
