"Netscape is now owed by AOL and could be on the verge of a rival as the worlds largest ISP plans to integrate it into their client software instead of IE"

Unfortunately NS began to loose ground to IE because Microsoft's browser was free and could render HTML with greater accuracy. By the time NS chose to become free it was already too late and IE was soaring ahead, something they never quite recovered from.

Netscape is now owed by AOL and could be on the verge of a rival as the worlds largest ISP plans to integrate it into their client software instead of IE. The browser itself is still updated, although v7 is identical to Mozilla v1 because it uses the same code. In other words Mozilla might be a better download since it's updated more than Netscape.

IMPORTANT: The screenshot is from a v7.01 preview release, which is essentially Mozilla v1 (bar the interface).

Cost: - FREE
OS Compatibility: - MS Windows / Mac OS / ??
Key Feature: - Customisable Interface (GUI)
Speed: - Slow (v6), Fast (v7 [Mozilla v1]).
HTML Rendering Quality: - v6 has problems with interpreting modern CSS style sheets and effects, sometimes misaligns tables by a single pixel, issues with table design flexibility. Not bad, yet not the best; we expect this to improve in v7 now that NS uses the final Mozilla v1 improvements.

Microsoft Internet Explorer v6

Internet Explorer first started to become popular with version 3.1, which was around the time that Microsoft released its Windows95 OS. Very little is known about the browser before v3 due to so few people using it and its infantile design compared with the then popular Netscape.

To date IE is used by the vast majority of web surfers around the world and makes up 96.5% of the visitors viewing our website. This is mostly down to the fact that it's still free and also imbedded into all of Microsoft's modern operating systems, something the competition has never been happy about.
