ClaraNET Interview 2

"It got a little crazy earlier in the year with several ISPs offering cut price unmetered deals which they simply could not sustain"

Starting off our Pre-Christmas content surge is an Interview with ClaraNET, a familiar figure in the ISP scene for many years and one that continues to grow and expand across Europe. Seemingly named after an unknown female, the ISP has been slow on the uptake of new unmetered products, although with good reason as past months dictate.

That said and ClaraNET has come a long way and does offer some rather expensive freecall options, although they are all reliable and fast with excellent support. It's nearly a year since our last interview and not much has changed, so we decided to ask Nick Wells how he felt about unmetered and the future:

1) Who are you and what do you do?

I'm Nick Wells, Marketing Manager of Claranet

2) What would you say is the most interesting/fun and hardest part of running an ISP?

It's been really interesting to be part of the development of the Internet in the UK, and see how it's moved from being the preserve of businessmen and academics to being used by people of literally all ages and lifestyles for every purpose imaginable.

It's a very fast moving Industry so I guess the most difficult part is keeping up with movements in the market in terms of new products becoming available, whilst still keeping the focus on our overall business strategy.

3) Unmetered ISPs finally seem to be settling down and a more realistic line of pricing is starting to appear, do you agree with this?

Absolutely. It got a little crazy earlier in the year with several ISPs offering cut price unmetered deals which they simply could not sustain. The pricing which is coming out now is more realistic and allows an ISP to be able to handle the uptake of customers without performance suffering, and make enough profit to make the service worthwhile from a business perspective.

4) What do you consider to be a light user, average user and heavy users hours per month average usage on your ISP?

Sorry, confidential information.

5) What's the general average of how many hours per month you'd expect an 'average' person to surf on your ISP?

Sorry, confidential information
