Looking at how to improve wireless Internet access for businesses |
UK Internet service providers (ISPs) who have partnered with aggregated Internet access companies such as iPass include Sirocom Ltd., European Telecommunications and Technology (ET&T), and ABS Telecom. Providing easy-to-use global remote access by teaming with iPass, they have brought simplicity to the lives of traveling employees from companies like Tandberg Television, HUON, Ltd., DEK Printing Machines Ltd. and the England Cricket Board. User companies also benefit from aggregated services by taking advantage of the buying power of one global service provider. IT managers are usually in favor of aggregated services because they are easier to deploy and there is only one common interface to support for all corporate users. Access for mobile workers and traveling executives becomes easier and more convenient without sacrificing security. Successful Internet aggregators offer access software that works with leading VPN, firewall and authentication systems without requiring a lot of set-up time. The aggregator also needs to support multiple platforms and devices such as Macintosh and Windows desktops, laptops, PDAs, handheld computers and other remote access devices. The aggregated network must be reliable and redundant, providing multiple access points in major cities throughout the world. Wireless access points need to be based on 802.11 standards, given its prevailing technology for wireless data communications. Nothing will frustrate a corporate executive or waste precious time more than a service that doesn't work when needed. Alarm clocks may always rattle the ears of jet-lagged travelers, airline food will always be, well, airline food, and moving around the world to conduct business will never be much fun. But, remote Internet connections tailored for travelers are becoming easier to find, more convenient to use, and simpler to access. And we have technology to thank for that.
