Mobile Broadband Interview - part 1 (T-Mobile)

"Future 4G services have often been touted with Mobile WiMAX in mind but there are other methods"

6. What are the chances of seeing a consumer affordable pay-as-you-go (PAYG) Mobile Broadband only package separate from mobile phone contracts? With this method the user could buy a USB or PCMCIA card adaptor and order data in blocks of 500MB or 1GB to be used up as and when required or carried over into future months.

Anybody can utilise T-Mobile's network of over 1,200 HotSpot locations to get simple pay-as-you-go broadband access throughout the UK without having to buy additional hardware. The success of our recent 'Wi-Fi Friday' promotion with Starbucks shows the demand for this service by customers throughout the UK.

7. Mobile Broadband services appear to be largely access-only orientated; will we see greater inclusion of additional services such as e-mail and webspace introduced to help make packages more useful by themselves?

T-Mobile believes in the open internet, allowing customers to choose the services that best meet their needs.

8. Future 4G services have often been touted with Mobile WiMAX in mind but there are other methods, not least the potential for further 3G enhancements beyond HSDPA.  Though it’s probably too early to talk about it with any certainty, which technology is most likely to dominate the next generation of mobile broadband after the current one has established itself?

In order to provide our customers with the best Mobile Broadband experience, T-Mobile is evaluating all next generation solutions for Mobile Broadband.

9. Presently one of the biggest hindrances to Mobile Broadband technology, especially the faster derivatives, is coverage. Few operators have truly extensive cover in this area, can we expect this to improve and if so, when?

T-Mobile has an extensive UK HSDPA coverage, over 84% of the UK population.

10. What can we expect to see from you on the Mobile Broadband front in the near future?

T-Mobile will continue to focus on providing the best service to the greatest number of its customers.

ISPreview UK would like to thank Ralf Pearson for taking the time to answer some of our questions. We’re currently working on the second part, which will offer responses from another major UK mobile operator, Orange.
