The advantage of doing this is that it allows you to circumvent expensive GPRS or MMS (picture messaging) tariffs by taking a photo and attaching it to an E-Mail for sending over the cheaper GSM network. Here’s how you do it:
  1. Go to the menu, scroll down and Select ‘Tools’, then ‘Settings’ and select ‘Connection’ from the list. Now select ‘Access Points’.
  2. Add a new access point and enter the following details (based on our own settings):
    -Name = Test
    -Data bearer = GSM data
    -Dial-up number = 0845 ***** (your ISP)
-User name = (your ISPs username)
    -Prompt password = No
    -Password = (your ISPs password)
    -Authentication = Normal
-Gateway IP address = (leave as 0.0.0.0)
    -Data call type = Analogue
    -Maximum data speed = Automatic
  3. Now save that profile and you’ll find a special ‘Inbox’ folder for it under the ‘Messages’ section, probably called ‘Test mail’.

If you’d like to surf full web pages then we’d advise against it because the screen is small, however you can still check out our special ‘lite’ ISPr site as linked above, or load an image of the weather directly by adding this URL:

Note that you’ll need to download the Reqwireless WebViewer trial to see HTML web pages:

http://www.reqwireless.com

Please always make sure that any URLs you enter into the application have a full address starting with ‘http://www’, just the domain or ‘www’ simply won’t work, you need to enter the full address line. You’ll need a Bluetooth link to your computer in order to transfer the required files to the phone.

The Future

It’s not yet known whether the above methods could be used with future 3G broadband wireless phones, the difference between 3G and GPRS/GSM protocols is quite vast. We do know that a PCMCIA based 3G Laptop modem is planned, yet details are scarce.

For now the above method can be used and some smart-phones, such as the 7650, will also soon be able to interface with Instant Messaging applications such as ICQ and MSN (software under trial).

Applications are also planned for better enhancing GPRS services, such as a live, full colour and always-on weather display. Dating services, video mail and live person-to-person video communications are all being working on.
