"Thankfully the music industry is no longer blind to the problem and has finally begun to combat such services"

Unsurprisingly, given their previous comments, Pipex has chosen not to take any such action. NDO is following a similar rout: “If you impose bandwidth limits or download restrictions in places, such as on P2P files, then you are not giving your users what they have paid and are entitled to.

Thankfully the music industry is no longer blind to the problem and has finally begun to combat such services by supporting a number of its own ‘legitimate’ (legal) commercial operations.

Legal song swapping services and special promotions, such as the famed ‘Digital Download Day’, have all helped to pull people back from the wrong side of the track. All of the ISPs we spoke to, including those that haven’t appeared above, agree that this is the best course of action.

Unfortunately the future is never certain; the music industry’s failure to recognise and effectively combat the problem earlier has inevitably led to an uphill battle. Quite what the future holds is anybodies guess, although ultimately it’s the individual that needs to be convinced.

We’d like to end with one final comment from Pipex’s David Rickards, while also thanking NDO for its considerable contribution.

With the arrival of affordable broadband access the Internet is coming of age. Users can truly begin to look beyond the connection and start to unlock the full potential offered by their Internet connection. Although already very popular, P2P and file sharing are still in their relative infancy - who knows what applications will arrive over the coming months to exploit the power of a low cost, always on, fast Internet connection.
