ISPreview ask the question, does unmetered actually exist? |
![]() Every single package or system from 0800 No.'s to BTSurftime and FRIACO has an underlying charge. Every minute you spend online with a BTSurftime or FRIACO package costs the ISP or Telco provider (if not BT) a per-minute charge. Details on these charges are not widely publicised and as such we can't be sure what they are, although standard 0800's are the most expensive. So as an example, and this is not based on any kind of fact, an 0800 might charge the normal BT rates underneath (the owner carries the cost), BTSurftime might be 0.60pence per minute and FRIACO might be 0.35ppm. All the while this ultimately gets paid to BT with the ISP or third party Telco paying for 'you'. Finally we have the port costs, which under FRIACO (Original outline) costs around £430 per year for one 64Kbps port. That's roughly £30 per month and allows you to access BT's network and the cheaper calls option, but at no time is this unmetered. ISP's Say One Thing - Telco's Pay The Other All of the above helps constitute the reason we refer to so called unmetered providers as freecall providers (slightly more realistic), although they should really be called cheap call providers. For more details you can checkout our 'Cost Of Unmetered' article, which helps explain in more detail the costs involved. Here we are back at stage one, understanding a little more about what unmetered is, yet not really sure if it actually exists. As mentioned briefly before, the bare butt of the problem comes from ISPs. The only ISP we know of that actually advertises themselves realistically is ClaraNet, almost all the rest lie! That's right, almost every single ISP out there is trying to find the best way of cheating you out of your hard earned cash. So what's new? Well exactly, business has been doing this to consumers since time began and there's nothing new about it. However the problem is the usual advertising and marketing applied to every other business won't work with unmetered. We're talking about a none physical and variable product that carries a cost both ways, ISPs just try to get their monthly charges in tune with the overall service use. Suddenly a second problem and the most important element in all of this comes to light, YOU. We Aren't Robots You see for some reason Telco's and ISPs while selling their products assume we are robots following a set path and not sentient beings. Both BTSurftime and FRIACO could be said to mathematically assume that a typical surfer makes no more than 3hours of online use a day. Don't shout just yet because at the very start people assumed 30mins to 1hour was more realistic. [Print Page | Next Page (3)]>>
