UK ISPs will also continue to shift their focus away from traditional dialup services and more onto modern broadband services. However it’s possible that toward the end of 2003 the limits of such technologies may finally become more obvious, thus forcing some services to introduce bandwidth restrictions and or raise prices.

Coverage for all of the key land-based broadband technologies should also improve, yet it remains to be seen how fast this will occur. So far all signs point to coverage having picked up toward the end of July/August 2003, although we’ll just have to wait and see.

SPAM will continue to grow out of control with no obvious road blocks ahead to hinder it. Internet based viruses are less likely to grow too far beyond their existing levels, although they will undoubtedly get more complex and many fear the coming of a super-bug, capable of infecting millions within minutes.

Satellite ISPs should see a slow but steady growth, while wireless alternatives could go either way. Even after two years Tele2 (Liberty Broadband) is still the only provider, albeit a troubled one, that can offer a barely national service.

There are a growing number of wireless services, yet to date they’ve been largely isolated and this will have to change before things improve. Unfortunately it’s another case of coverage, or lack thereof, being to blame.

Finally we come to the ever delayed 3G (third generation – UTMS) broadband wireless mobile phone services, which should slowly start to appear during 2003. Sadly we fear that the first two years of this technology will be marred by high prices and limited applications, much as GPRS found during 2002, only worse!

Whatever happens 2003 is sure to be an eventful year, if only it were all good news.
