AOL Court Case

By:Daniel @ 4:29:PM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

Here's some news that may not surprise some people:

"A lawsuit has been taken out against AOL, accusing it of violating privacy laws. The complainant, Christopher Specht, alleges that Netscape's SmartDownload software secretly monitors all .exe and .zip files that are downloaded. Downloaded file info is fed back to Netscape along with an identifying cookie that sits in the Navigator browser.

Specht says AOL (don't forget that AOL now owns Netscape along with every other hi-tech company) is using this setup to eavesdrop. "It is using SmartDownload to intercept and to send to defendants information about a communication to which defendants are not a party," the complaint says."

Well if this is true AOL could lose quite a few customers. But we doubt a big company like AOL would do this to their customers.

BT Internet Problems

By:zeon @ 8:40:AM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

The latest post on the BTI status page:

"We are currently investigating a problem with the web server platform and you may be experiencing difficulties connecting to the service. If this does occur, please wait a few moments and redial. Please bear with us as we are working urgently to resolve this problem and apologise for any inconvenience.

We have been continuing with our investigations into the recent problems customers have experienced with web access through
the range of IP Addresses starting 62.7.*.*

A fault was discovered in the configuration of caching through this particular IP range, to alleviate this problem caching was temporarily removed. Further checks have been made on this on this configuration, our testing has now shown that the problem has been resolved. The caching was brought back on line and page requests are being processed correctly.

Access to our 0800 numbers have also been an issue recently. It has been discovered that a process intended to increase PSTN network capacity for 0800 calls had been incorrectly reported as being operational. This reduced the capacity for such calls and in turn caused network busy messages to be returned when the number was dialled. The process is being reconfigured to perform correctly and we are currently monitoring this to ensure that PSTN network
available returns to expected levels.

They never seem to be able to admit to having any problems with capacity or with the network just being busy.

The SMTP mail error of this morning has been identified to a fault on one of the mail server machines, which was subsequently taken out of service. This resulted in a backlog of mail being processed, this gave an error of too many concurrent connections. The affected server machine has been repaired and returned to service.

That's 4 faults covered in one status post. BT can't seem to run this ISP without encountering a huge number of problems.

Buzzline Refunds Again?

Catrina has e-mail us with an update on the situation with Buzzline. Well the refund still hasn't arrived. The question is will it ever arrive or will people have to start going down the legal route to get it back.

RHA - Multiple Logins

By:zeon @ 8:04:AM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

This issue was brought to our attention by one readers e-mail. The reader said:

"I encountered a group of players on a Counter-strike server chatting about how they were using RHA without having paid for it."

We have also encountered some people using RHA in this way. Mark is the expert on this but it seems as though you can login unlimited numbers of people using one account.

The reader then later went on to suggest a fix for this problem:

"I'm certain that it would be relatively simple to limit connections to 2 per user id (for multilink) this would free up a lot of the lines that are being used with shared and stolen details and help to ease the connectivity problems that plague RHA and save them money that they are spending on the calls being made by people who haven't paid."

AV Update

By:Daniel @ 1:23:AM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

N4N found this in The Telegraph:

"The recently launched unmetered service from AltaVista has only managed to get 25,000 customers online each week.

A spokesman for AltaVista said: "We have been aware of the problems people have had with some other free access services so we have limited the numbers to ensure they get a high quality of service."

Anyone who registered since the service was first announced will have to wait in turn for an email from AltaVista with details of how they can get online. AltaVista is unable to give anyone now registering a date when they will get on the service."

N4N later went on to say that Altavista will be offering off-peak for £10 pm which doesn't really make sense as it will be twice as expensive as the 24/7 £60 pa option.

AV is following along the lines of other unmetered ISP's already. Lets hope they don't get even more problems.

Weird goings on at VD they suddenly close the support then reopen it with a different number.

ISP's subscribers

By:Daniel @ 5:55:PM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

A couple of people have asked us how many subscribers ISP's have and the FT have reported this:

"World Online, the Dutch-owned ISP, has 2.2 million customers, of which 1.5 million are in the UK, according to the FT. The other 700,000 customers are scattered over another 15 countries."

And

"Demon, the veteran ISP now owned by Thus, has 260,000 UK subscribers, 4.4 per cent less than last year."

Those are the only subscriber figures we could find. If anyone can find any others please post them in the comments.

As for Demon even though they have a lot of subscribers they are still in our view a very good 0845 ISP but unfortunately 0845 ISP's aren't in demand and unmetered is the future.

JANET Response to RHA

By:zeon @ 4:33:PM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

It would see that there is more to it than a simple port scanner:

"The block that we have had to place on JAK Internet traffic arises from activities conveyed through their peering with JANET and which pose a serious threat to the proper operation of JANET. Until these are resolved with JAK Internet it will regrettably be necessary to maintain the block. However, please be assured that it is in no way our policy to block traffic from any Internet source, except where it poses a threat to other JANET users. As and when this problem is resolved we expect to restore the traffic flow.

The explanation provided by RedHotAnt on the web page for the block is not a complete story; the user was *not* port scanning: the issues were *far* more serious than indicated - these issues and investigations are still continuing and until we are satisfied that the proper security measures are in place we will not restore connectivity.

I apologise for the problems you are all encountering and appreciate the fact that the majority of the users of this ISP are law abiding honest people, who are unfortunately caught up in this tangled web.

Regards
JANET Customer Service"

Cyberia and Free Net Access

By:Ross14 @ 10:19:AM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

Some of us might know about Cyberia - the first internet café to launch in the uk - well, they have just announced that they will be providing totally free internet access from July 20th. Here's more:

"The new service will start on 20 July and is being sponsored by free ISP Zoom, Easynet and interactive music company eJay. Shopping portal Zoom is the brainchild of Eva Pascoe, one of the founders of Cyberia.

Cyberia believes the three month sponsorship, coupled with the sale of food and drink in the cafe, will cover costs. Another three sponsors are currently being courted.

A spokesman for EasyEverything -- the Internet cafe chain set up by EasyJet millionaire Stelios Haji-Ioannou -- has no intention of following suit. "We are only asking for a pound. People give away that without thinking about it," says a spokesman. He is not convinced by Cyberia's business model.

"There is no such thing as a free lunch. One wonders how long it will be until Cyberia go out of business."

This is really a great idea. Free Net access in Cafés, whatever next?

V.92 Standard

By:zeon @ 8:58:AM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

Another article on Vnunet.com this time about a new modem standard. The new standard will improve upload speeds and will enable users to suspend the connection when taking an incoming call.

"Standards for improving upload speeds for dial-up modem users, and allowing them to suspend their connection to answer incoming phone calls, have been approved by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

The union said the new v.92 standards will improve upload speeds to 48Kbps with the best connections, enabling 40 per cent faster upload times. Upload speeds, even on 56Kbps branded modems - which are compatible with the ITU's v.90 standard - are usually only 24Kbps to 28Kbps."

There is also a few other bits of info in the article that can be found HERE

These new standards should help modem users if they are taken up by ISPs.

Admin Not Tech ADSL Delays

By:zeon @ 10:02:PM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

According to an article on Vnunet, BT is blaming admin issues and not tech issues for the delay in the rollout of ADSL. Here's a snip:

"A BT spokesman said: "There needs to be sufficient testing of handling processes such as database management, and billing and ordering processes. The end user will interact with the ISP, which interacts with the network operator. While this sounds fine on paper, it is actually a complex issue and we need to make sure the process is painless for the end user."

Industry watchdog Oftel said it is monitoring the rollout of ADSL services, but a spokesman said: "As far as we are aware BT has not missed any deadline with [its ADSL] consumer service."

JANET and RHA

By:zeon @ 7:16:PM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

RHA have posted an explanation to what is happening with users being unable to access Janet sites.

"4th July 2000 18:30
There is currently an issue connecting to the Janet Network as Janet are blocking all IP traffic originating from the RHA Network.

The reason why RHA users are being blocked from connecting to the Janet network is due to an RHA user port scanning the Janet network, the offending users account has now been terminated for breaching our acceptable use policy but the block remains in place.

We are currently working with Janet to resolve this issue but are powerless until Janet decide to reverse their decision.

If you would like to help us to get access to the Janet network restored, just simply contact Janet via email at: cert@cert.ja.net

Looks like its a simple case of getting Janet to unblock the ip range. Thanks to Simon for pointing us to this.

RedHotAnt Respond to The Register

2. In line with our responsibilities under the Data Protection Act we passed all information onto the appropriate authorities - in this full scale security audit.

4. A full internal inquiry has been instigated regarding this case the computer fraud section of the Kent Constabulary.

3. We have appointed a group of external consultants to perform a matter."

Iomart ADSL

By:zeon @ 8:47:AM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

Yesterday Iomart annouced the launch of their ADSL services. Here is some of the press release:

"Iomart plans to quickly develop further ADSL based applications for the business market, including VoIP combined with the company's growing integrated web hosting services. iomart are particularly well placed in this regard having no legacy leased line revenue to worry about - a major advantage over traditional infrastructure based telcos."

"The full details of the ADSL services are as follows:

* 24 hours a day, seven days a week internet access - no more dial up charges

* Flat rate unmetered access

* High speed connectivity, a maximum of 256k upstream, 2 Mbps downstream, depending on line conditions, assure high bandwidth for swift search, file transfers and email retrieval

* Tailored service infrastructure for the delivery of broadband services such as video, audio and gaming services

* Multi-tasking - internet access, voice calls and faxes all on one standard analogue telephone line"

This all sounds very good but unless BT are forced to start the full ADSL service soon no one can get it. Prices are from £40 - £235 per month. Iomart runs Madasafish. Which was also mentioned in the Zdnet news about ADSL.

World Offline For 6 Hours

By:zeon @ 8:27:AM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

World Online suffered a small outage which made it impossible to use the ISP from 19:00 - 1:00 last night. The World Online status page is just showing the mail servers as being down and hasn't been updated since 20:20 last night. The most likely cause of the problem is a router failure between Level3 and the World Online hardware, as everything is now routing through U-Net and not Level3.

*Update*
This has now appeared on the World Online status page:

4 July 2000 - E-mail and Browsing

Last night many users were having difficulty seeing web pages and sending/receiving e-mails. There were some problems with one of the backbone links to the platform. This was causing route flaps which were having an adverse affect on connectivity. This has now been rectified.

Freeserve's Lost Bid

By:Ashley @ 8:15:PM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

The Register have posted an interesting article, which explains why the £6 billion bid made by T-Online collapsed.

The article says,

"Share option friction and press leaks all played a part in the collapse of T-Online's £6 billion bid for Freeserve, the Dixons ISP boss claims."

It also goes on to say:

"John Pluthero, Freeserve's 38-year-od CEO, told The Telegraph there were "a whole bunch" of reasons the deal bombed. Chief issue seems to have been Freeserve's share option scheme. All Freeserve staff have options equivalent to one year's salary, with senior execs holding a lot more. In total, the company has issued 7.5 million options - worth around £45 million at T-Online's bid price. "

Will the freeserve bosses be able to keep hold of the millions they have in the company, or will they have to give in at some point? We will have to wait and see on this matter.

BT Cellnet Blocks WAP Sites

By:zeon @ 6:46:PM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

BT are apparently blocking access to certain WAP sites on their phone network for no reason. One customer of BT Cellnet e-mailed Yac to ask them why he couldn't access Yac.com and got this reply:

"Last week BT imposed restrictions on the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) sites their customers can access on their BT Cellnet phones. The YAC web site appears to be one of the web sites affected by this.

We have contacted BT to inform them that our customers are experiencing this problem and they say that they are looking in to it. However, in the mean time we do advise you to contact BT to make them aware of how this restriction is affecting your use of your BT Cellnet phone and other WAP services.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require further assistance.

Kind regards,

Armelle
YAC Support Team"

The e-mail from this customer also states that he had trouble accessing a few other sites from a BT Cellnet phone.

Well this is another example of BT being very arrogant. Unless there is another reason for the block. We suggest you steer clear of any BT Cellnet Wap related products until the problem is sorted.

Madasafish ADSL Rollout

By:Ross14 @ 5:13:PM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

We all know about the delays in the ADSL rollout by BT, but defiant ISP Madasafish have said that they will go ahead with their ADSL service on the third week of July, well, so they told ZDNet UK.

Here is some of the article:

"News that BT is delaying roll out until late August or early September has come as a surprise to iomart -- owners of madasafish -- which confesses it is bemused by the telco's excuses. BT claims it needs more time to "flood test" the system and blames ISPs for not providing enough trialists.

"I cannot believe it is down to ISPs. We have a waiting list of thousands and all ISPs are going to be fighting in terms of getting more people. We could certainly provide more than we have been allocated by BT," says ADSL product manager for iomart Phil Worms.

As far as he is concerned the launch is going ahead as planned for the third week in July. "BT hasn't said otherwise and unless it reneges on its contract it is going ahead," says Worms. The service will be the same as BTopenworld's offering and will be priced at £39.99 per month.

According to Worms the service will improve when the local loop is unbundled in July 2001. "The services we offer will change when we are in the position to manage our own destiny. Either we will add more services or the price will fall," he says."

Well, let's hope that Madasafish make a stand and launch as planned. We need to see more ISP's facing up to BT.

Oftel Takes Action Against BT

By:zeon @ 5:01:PM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

The Register has reported that Oftel are finally starting to do there job and have taken action against BT for anti-competitive practices in its mobile arm:

"Oftel found that BT Cellnet's service providers were not covering their costs (ie. they were working at a loss) and shortfalls were being made up by sums from the company's network business. Clearly anti-competitive behaviour, leaving independent service providers with very little chance of survival.

And so, BT has to stop and (gasp!) start behaving like a competitive company. David Edmonds, Oftel top man, suggested perhaps a lowering of Cellnet's wholesale price."

The full article can be found HERE

Now hopefully Oftel can take some more action against BT in the residential market.

10 million Internet Users

By:Daniel @ 4:25:PM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

An interesting report over at Yahoo! News:

"Britons using the Internet at home topped 10 million for the first time in May, with gossiping the main attraction, new figures showed on Monday.

Money, computers, entertainment and holidays attracted men whilst women were more likely to use the Net to save time and find health, government and grocery shopping information for their families, Internet research group MMXI Europe said.

The survey of more than 4,000 people found the average user spends five hours online a month with ICQ and various Messenger chat services keeping them glued to their screens the longest.

In April, 9.6 million Britons were online at home -- though millions more have Net access in their offices.

The most visited Internet companies in Britain, France and Germany were unchanged from April -- U.S. portal Yahoo! , France Telecom's Wanadoo Internet service provider and Deutsche Telekom's T-Online respectively.

The best-ranking British-owned site was Freeserve which was third, behind Microsoft's MSN, and was used by a third of Net surfers."

More and more people are coming on the Internet and more will want unmetered ISP's. We hope the ISP's will be able to cope with the demand.

Latest From RHA

By:zeon @ 6:52:AM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

RHA have finally been able to send a newsletter out after their backbone link problems last week:

I apologise for not sending you a newsletter last week. I hope
you can appreciate we were battling to get our backbone link
up and running.

All servers are now fully functional, but there is still a
congestion issue at busy periods of the day. We have had
very positive moves towards the extra capacity promised and
are confident this upgrade will be in very shortly.

Don't forget we supply network status messages on
the technical support line which will keep you regularly
updated concerning any service failures; after dialling the
technical support number and the phone is answered simply
press 2 then 1 on your telephone to receive our latest network
status.

The last news we had on the RHA upgrade was on June 12th when we were told it would be 3-4 weeks until any extra capacity was added, so we hope to see some improvement in the next week or so.

What I really need is comments on the service, e.g, the ups and the downs. I'm not a user myself, so this is why I especially need WAP users help.

Please email anything you have to say about WAP to ross.fleming@lineone.net

Please note that some comments may be used in the article, although no names will be published, except that is, if you want it to be.

Vispa Freecall Service Details

By:mark @ 8:11:AM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

Vispa have finally sent us some details on their new freecall package, bit late in posting because I shouldn't even be working today:

"Choosing the right Internet Service Provider is a difficult decision at the best of times, however with the next wave of Internet access just around the corner who better to understands your needs than a Internet Service Provider that has a proven track record of putting customers first, continues to maintain higher levels of service quality and understands the needs of both personal and business customers.

After much work and effort, we are just a few weeks away from switching on new equipment for Vispa Connect Offpeak, Vispa Connect 24*7 and Vispa Connect ADSL packages, as well as continuing to operate an extensive 0845 solution with our re-branded Vispa Connect Lite service.

However now is the time that we finally open up our doors for pre-signing of these services. This will be rolled out in a simple structured manner. Phase One will be for current loyal Vispa customers to be given the first chance to move over to our new services. Phase Two will see the introduction of pre-signed new users being introduced to the services. Please Note: New services will be user capped.

For more information and Pre-signup information then visit
http://www.vispaconnect.co.uk
"

Remember those under ISPreview Online will be part of phase one, we'll bring you more on this service in the near future. Note to Martin: Send this to Richard next time as I'm going on holiday =).

OnDigital Get Net Wired

By:mark @ 10:22:AM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

Those who subscribe to various DVD or Technology magazines will already have been aware of OnDigital's recent announcement about net access. However today http://www.theregister.co.uk has been able to reveal even more, the Digital Terrestrial TV supplier is to offer TV screen web access:

"OnDigital, the digital TV service jointly owned by Granada and Carlton Communications, has now linked up with the BBC to work on its TV Internet service.

The service will allow customers to flick over to the Internet, while the TV picture remains in the corner of the screen. This will be provided to OnDigital customers for an as yet undisclosed fee.

This literally fits with research from market analysts Forrester. This reckons 40 per cent of Internet users watch less TV now they're online - if a small picture counts as less TV. (The good news is that tiresome dotcom TV ads might disappear once netizens completely stop watching TV.)

OnDigital is producing an "Internet Box" which will get users online with a 56Kbps modem through a standard phone line. It will also be ADSL ready, even if BT isn't.

Further announcements about parters, launch timing and pricing will be forthcoming over the next few weeks, the spokesman said, as would the spec and brand of the access box.
"

So sadly you'll have to add yet another box to the current stack, perhaps instead they could of brought out newer versions of the current ones for a rebate?

That's not the only problem, Digital Terrestrial reception in the UK is on a par with the likes of channel 5. Only some 60% can actually get any kind of quality, the rest have to deal with fuzzy pictures (break-up in digitals case), limited channels or nothing at all. So if I want web access then I'll use my Dreamcast thank you very much =).

That last bit was my own 60cents on Digital TV, just kinder crept in =).

RHA Refuse Refunds

By:mark @ 10:12:AM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

Nothing new here but worth pointing out anyway, http://www.net4nowt.com has received a letter from an angry RedHotAnt customer who isn't allowed a refund:

"The visitor who received the letter said the 21 days taken to process the refund is nothing more than a delaying tactic. He only managed to connect to the Internet for just under 7 hours, yet RHA refuse to refund his subscription. Instead they pointed out that under their terms and conditions he was not entitled to his money back.

Surely this is a violation of customers statutory rights? Under the Supply of Goods and Service Act 1982, the service must be 'fit for the purpose' and 'of merchantable quality'.

Not so long ago LibertySurf ran into problems. They offered their customers an extra month to compensate, and if anyone was unhappy with the service they were allowed to return the CD for a full refund, regardless of how long they managed to connect for.
"

It is indeed a violation of the customer's statutory rights, you can't have such a clause as RHA have used. If you don't agree then contact trading standards and you'll see.

On the subject of Trading Standards, we know you read our humble little site and so how about you get in touch with RHA over the refunds? This has been a problem for several months now and nobody has addressed it.

Going Off

By:mark @ 9:49:PM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

Ok people I'll be leaving on Monday, but I'll still be around until Sunday, however I'm not likely to have a chance to update due to last minute packing and work. For those of you who don't remember, I'm finally getting out of this hell hole and off to Greece for a week away, I'll be back on the 14th and expect updates again on the 15th.

While I'm away the staff will cover, they've been a bit lax in the past and so I hope Richard can keep things in shape. Any news related E-Mails that are usually sent privately to me should be sent to Richard (Zeon). Any other mails should just be sent to me and I'll pick them up once home again.

Chances are I'll end up doing some more updates before going; however don't expect anything on Sunday or Monday bar the weekly update - if at all.

Surftime & Games-World.Net

By:mark @ 9:41:PM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

Games-World.NET sent us their 60cents on the 128K ISDN issue, here's what they had to say:

"I had a meeting with BT on Wednesday 28 June regarding Games-World.Net providing Surftime. And I was told by BT themselves that Surftime will not support 128kbps ISDN connections, it seems that the equipment they are using will support it and that on BT's homepage it states that they will be doing it, but they will not be doing it?? I see no problem with it, however not even the account manager we had a meeting with could explain why they would not be doing it."

Hmm not even the highest level of BT Staff are capable of explaining the simplest of problems, hmm. You can connect @ 128Kbps on Surftime, however you'll be billed for the second connection and we'd like to see a combined package as originally promised.
