Free Dot Net Hunts For a Buyer

By:mark.j @ 10:22:AM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

It now looks as if Free Dot Net is going the way of Breathe.Net and on the hunt for any potential buyers. The ISP held a meeting on the 20th December 2000 last year to decide this, on the following 22nd users found their E-Mail had vanished:

At that time, shareholders were offered the choice of continuing Free Dot Net as a going concern, negotiating with a prospective buyer, or putting the firm into liquidation. He said the majority of shareholders at the meeting had backed the board's recommendation that the firm be sold.

Last Friday, Giorgiou insisted that the company was still in operation but he couldn't say when email services would be restored to frustrated customers.

"We can't say anything more at the moment," said Giorgiou. "We won't be in a position to make further comment this week."

So it looks like another ISP is staking its hope on finding a potential saviour for their service, otherwise it will eventually fade away. More @ VNUNet.

IC24 Extend 0800 - Perhaps Not

By:mark.j @ 10:14:AM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

IC24 are an ISP known for continually extending their completely free 0800 ISP access offer, last time it was extended we had a time limit up until 31st January 2001. However judging by their past appearances, IC24 is late if they plan to extend it once more:

A notice on the ISP's site warns that the "offer closes January 31st 2001 - outside promotional hours calls will be charged at local rate".

This was confirmed by one of the 50p-a-minute help line representatives who said the offer was scheduled to end at the end of the month.

However, a spokeswoman for the ISP said the "offer" had been extended three times in the past. And although no decision had been made yet, there's no reason to suggest that IC24 won't extend the offer for a fourth time.

No reason accept the fact they haven't said they will yet, although everybody will of course be rooting for them to do that. Lets not forget that no matter what happens, this is an ISP who gave us the impossible for a lengthy period of time. It may not have been perfect, but from time to time it did work, more @ The Register.

NTLs 12,800 Cable Modems

By:mark.j @ 10:06:AM - - SendNews [HERE] / PrintNews [HERE]

It wasn't long ago that NTL introduced their new low Cable Modem prices (fourth quarter 2000), so it comes as no surprise that in that same period they tripled sales:

There are now 12,800 cable modem customers, with the increased rate of take-up being attributed to recent price cuts from £40 to £19.99 per month.

CableNews also has some other information related to the fact that NTLs share price has risen by 12%, which could mean price rises!:

Jumping on the bandwagon started by rivals Sky and ONdigital, ntl is to increase prices in phases from next month for analogue customers and from April or May for digital customers. cablenews:uk can reveal that prices for a single phone line and cable television (digital or analogue) will rise to £11.99 per month, while the cost of two phone lines and a base television package will increase to £19.99 per month. ntl claims this still undercuts competitors at the lower end of the market.

For the record this last item refers to TV/Phone packages and not Cable Modems, although nobody likes a price rise. Imagine if BT put their phone prices up each time shares were high =(.
