"Some of our projects may enable us to extend a town or city’s network into the surrounding rural areas"

uk fibre optic cable6. Velocity 1, a Fibrecity ISP, informed its Bournemouth customers during late February-March 2011 that it had been forced to suspend, with precious little notice, their broadband services because of the projects wider troubles.

At the time we understood that 10,000 homes were connected to the service, with a further 12,000+ being within reach. Can you clarify, what is the current situation with regards to live service availability, coverage and actual customer adoption?

CityFibre (Mark Collins):

After we completed a thorough audit of the network, we had to make the decision to take it offline to complete the overhaul it needed. This inevitably has led to the suspension of service to a small number of trial users.

To date, the network has passed 24,000 homes in Bournemouth. 10,000 of these homes have two fibres directly connected to the property and the remaining 14,000 require minor ‘last meters’ installation work should the resident chose to contract with a service provider that is offering services over our fibre to the home network.

Currently we are testing an active service with a number of our engineers and have committed to the network being ready to deliver services by the end of the year.

7. Has CityFibre worked or considered working with Bournemouth and other councils to seek funding from the governments Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) office, which could be used to aid in your deployment of ultrafast services?

CityFibre (Mark Collins):

CityFibre is actively talking to all stakeholders involved in broadband delivery including government at a local and central level. BDUK’s primary focus is rural projects and as our strength is in connecting towns and cities, they do not form part of our financing strategy. Some of our projects may enable us to extend a town or city’s network into the surrounding rural areas and in this situation we may well look to support the council for BDUK funding.
