Then, there are concerns about data security. Increasingly, corporations are adopting virtual private networks (VPNs), personal firewalls and other security measures to protect valuable corporate information moving back and forth between headquarters and mobile users. Security risks are compounded further when data travels over a wireless network, which can be more easily intercepted or "sniffed".

Depending on the technology requirements of each location, business travelers may have trouble initiating security safeguards in the first place. The VPN, firewalls and other policies may be initiated differently from carrier to carrier and may even be incompatible, with varying standards from one wireless access provider to the next.

Business travelers may also experience frustration when they receive all the charges for remote Internet access. Not just one bill, but different bills for every remote location where he or she connected online, resulting in a barrage of paperwork that must be sifted, sorted and filed to complete a travel claim. Corporate finance people must then keep track of all of the paperwork-bills for dialup versus wireless service and bills from employees' various hotels, business centres and airport access points throughout their route of travel. And this must be done for every mobile professional in the company.

If you are one of the growing number of business travelers around the world (or one of the administrative people who keep track of them), there are forthcoming changes that will ease the burdens associated in gaining access to the Internet from many different locations. Many broadband and wireless Internet access providers have begun to partner with an aggregated service provider, such as iPass Inc. in London, to simplify the process of connecting to the Internet from many locations.

An Internet aggregator is a neutral, third party that integrates various dial-up, wireless and broadband access points from carriers and ISPs to create a single global, high-speed, Internet network that gives travelers secure global access with a simple, cost-effective billing structure and a single, consistent user interface.
