ISP Review looks at wireless Internet access usng a mobile phone |
IrDA/Bluetooth Equipped Computer (PDA, Laptop etc.): The most common method for close range wireless communications and data transfer is IrDA (InfraRed), yet this is limited by the fact that you have to align both ports to face each other in order to keep the communication active. Many WAP phones also have an un-configurable time limit for IrDA port activity, thus meaning that such connections can be cut without warning. Bluetooth (BT) is the new and better standard; it can find other BT devices without being in a direct line of site and can be left on constantly. BT connections are unlikely to be dropped. Use Bluetooth over IrDA wherever possible. USED IN TEST = Bluetooth & IrDA Based Pocket LOOX PocketPC
Resilient/Compatible Dialup
ISP: Note that if possible you should try to find an ISP closer to home and then locate its local STD number, the provider must attach a local number to the 0845, thus every truly local and independent ISP should have one, ask. The reason for the above is because some mobile operators will charge extra for dialling another operator’s code (e.g. 0808 is not a universal unmetered code). Finding an ISP with a local number is always preferred, otherwise 0845 (LCR) should be fine. USED IN TEST = Clara.net 0845 (Local Call Rate) Dialup How do you do it? It’s now very important that anybody choosing to try this have some familiarity with Dialup Networking (DUN) and its advanced settings. This article isn’t designed as a detailed technical tutorial and expects you to understand the settings involved.
