"GPRS is a ‘pay for bandwidth’ system and simply isn’t worth the marginal speed gain"

You can also find special ‘Pocket’ versions of software for browsing Newsgroups, IRC and even Instant Messaging applications such as ICQ or MSN Messenger. You’ll need to hunt for them, but they do exist. Please remember that the cost of mobile phone calls is high, so avoid spending too long online.

For the more advanced surfers out there a free proxy server designed to compress pages for mobile PocketPC users can be found here:

Note that you can also use GPRS for faster surfing, but we’d strongly advise against it. GPRS is a ‘pay for bandwidth’ system and simply isn’t worth the marginal speed gain; it also requires some setting changes that we’ve yet to fully test. If you still want to try it then check out Microsoft’s tutorial:

For improved speed your best bet is probably ‘Orange’ Hi-Speed Data (HSCD), which is faster than GPRS and works over current GSM connections, making it a better choice for this kind of surfing.

Internet On Your Mobile Phone

Modern mobiles such as the Nokia 7650 (used in this test) are also capable of allowing you to dialup to your ISP directly for limited E-Mail and web surfing capabilities, note that this is NOT WAP access.
