The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today made it possible for future home WiFi networks to harness 500MHz of radio spectrum frequency in the new 6GHz band, which will significantly boost the speed of licence-exempt indoor home wireless networks (i.e. via the Wi-Fi 6/6E – 802.11ax standard).

Broadband ISP Virgin Media and Cisco have joined forces to setup the first European commercial deployment of OpenRoaming technology for residents on the Canary Wharf estate, which makes it easier for mobile users to stay connected to the internet by allowing them to seamlessly and securely roam between different WiFi hotspots.

The UK telecoms regulator has today proposed to free up 500MHz of spectrum in the 6GHz frequency band on a licence-exempt basis so that it can be used by the latest WiFi networks (e.g. Wi-Fi 6 / 6E – 802.11ax), which would make such networks faster, more reliable and a bit more secure.

The Wi-Fi Alliance has begun its campaign to nudge broadband and telecoms regulators from across the world to support their efforts to approve the 6GHz band for use alongside WiFi networks, which could in theory be introduced into the latest Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) standard alongside the Wi-Fi 6E terminology.

A test conducted by the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) on the new Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) standard at the Mettis Aerospace factory in the UK has managed to deliver a real speed of 700Mbps (unclear if this is just download) with latency below 6ms (milliseconds), although that’s a far cry from the multi-Gigabit speeds promised.

For as long as we can remember different generations of Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) technology or simply, WiFi, has been known by its industry standard designations (e.g. IEEE 802.11ac). But forget all that because the Wi-Fi Alliance have now adopted consumer friendly naming conventions.

At present nearly all of the modern broadband routers and computers that you buy will support the 802.11ac standard for WiFi Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) via the 2.4GHz and 5GHz spectrum bands. But get ready because the 10Gbps capable 802.11ax standard is coming.

One of the unseen costs of running a modern Home Broadband connection stems from its impact on your electricity bill, not least the price of keeping your Internet router or modem device switched-on around the clock. We take a closer look at the costs of running such hardware.

A recent study from Qualcomm Technologies has concluded that home WiFi (WLAN) wireless networks will need more than double the current amount of radio spectrum (around the 5GHz band) to deliver “sustained” speeds of 1Gbps (1000Mbps+) throughout an entire home.

The forthcoming 2015 launch of the new 802.11ac-2013 WiFi WLAN wireless home networking standard (here), which promises speeds of up to 7Gbps (Gigabits per second), hasn’t even happened yet and Huawei are already overshadowing it with plans to introduce a 10Gbps standard (802.11ax) during 2018.
