A new survey involving 651 members of the Countryside Alliance, which was conducted by UK broadband ISP Gigaclear, has found that 85% of rural businesses view their current internet connection as being either poor but manageable (47%), or unmanageably poor (38%). Unsurprisingly, most of them want “ultrafast fibre” to fix it.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Broadband and Digital Communication has launched a new inquiry, which will examine how reforms to the Electronic Communications Code (ECC) could help boost the deployment of “full fibre” broadband in rural and urban areas across the UK.

The UK Government has just launched another Public Review, this time for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly in South West England, which aims to identify any existing or planned commercial coverage of gigabit broadband ISP networks. The review will help to establish the areas where public investment may be needed to deploy the service.

Last year Neos Networks scooped the £10.5m Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) contract to deploy a new gigabit-capable Dark Fibre network to connect 190 public sector sites (hospitals, council buildings etc.) in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. A total of 93 sites have now been completed, supported by 153km of new underground fibre cable.

A new report suggests that UK ISP WeFibre (Telcom) may have dropped the rural Ceredigion (Wales) village of Llanon from their gigabit voucher supported Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband rollout plan, which occurred after Openreach (BT) announced that they’d cover the community. But the situation may not be so clear-cut.

The state aid supported Superfast Staffordshire project, which is working with Openreach (BT) to extend the local coverage of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) services, has today announced the completion of its contract. As a result of the rollout more than 97% of local homes and businesses can now order such speeds from an ISP.

The latest independent study of UK broadband coverage for H1 2021 has estimated that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have now increased their reach to 24.33% of premises (up from 19.2% in H2 2020), while 41.72% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 37.4%) and 66.9% can get 100Mbps+ (up from 64.3%).

The Scottish Government has published a final report to help summarise the achievements from one part of their £463m (public and private investment) Digital Scotland project with BT (Openreach), which overall helped 950,600 extra premises to access “fibre broadband” (FTTC / FTTP) services. But it comes with a few caveats.

The Government’s Building Digital UK team has tweaked the eligibility rules for rural gigabit vouchers in order to balance against the issues caused when parts of the UK are placed under a Public Review as part of the £5bn Project Gigabit programme, which can cause in-scope premises to suddenly become ineligible for vouchers.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) programme has today issued its response to the UK Government’s consultation on upgrading broadband for “Very Hard to Reach Premiuses” (VHTRP), which calls for larger Gigabit Broadband Vouchers to support rural builds and warns against moving away from “future proof” fibre solutions.

Broadband ISP Fibrus has this morning finally confirmed that they’ve won the Full Fibre Northern Ireland Consortium (FFNI) contract, which is valued at £23m and will see the UK operator expand a new gigabit-capable “full fibre” network to connect over 969 public-sector sites (police, GPs, council offices etc.) in “up to” 10 council areas.

The UK Government will today reveal that “up to” 234,000 hard-to-reach rural homes and businesses in Wales have been identified as “in scope” to potentially receive a gigabit-capable broadband upgrade, which should come as part of the new £5bn Project Gigabit programme.

Telecoms and media giant Virgin Media (VMO2) has, for the first time, harnessed the UK Government’s Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme in order to extend their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to connect rural locations in West Sussex (England) – with residents in Steyning, Upper Beeding and Bramber being invited to participate.

Technology firm Cisco has today published their UK Broadband Index, which surveyed 2,000 employees across the country to get their take on the current standard of home internet connectivity. Overall, 70% want to see the economic recovery post-COVID19 being built on better internet access, and 55% believe “broadband should be free.“
