The UK government currently seems to be going through an extended cabinet reshuffle, which yesterday saw the Secretary of State at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), Peter Kyle MP, being moved to the role of Secretary of State for Business and replaced by Liz Kendall MP. But the UK Telecoms Minister, Chris Bryant MP, has also gone and is currently without a replacement.

The topic of UK broadband coverage and the future of TV came up for debate in Parliament yesterday, which did a good job of highlighting the challenges. On the one hand, some MPs believe that the “switch-off of terrestrial TV in the 2030s is completely premature and unrealistic“, while the government warned that as terrestrial TV audiences fall, the cost of keeping it would eventually become unsustainable.

The Government’s (DSIT) Building Digital UK agency has today published their annual progress report on the £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme, which covers the April 2024 to March 2025 period and reveals that related interventions delivered 152,700 premises with gigabit-capable coverage during this period (total so far of 1.227m – including past schemes/years).

The Kent County Council (KCC) in England has complained to the UK government about a “lack of progress” being made on the region’s Project Gigabit broadband rollout contract for rural communities. The £112m (state aid) contract for this was awarded to CityFibre in early 2024 (here), which committed to extend full fibre to 50,000+ hard-to-reach premises.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents many of the UK’s alternative broadband networks, has today posted somewhat of a belated welcome to the new Digital and Technologies Sector Plan. But they also warn that “further clarity is needed” on how the Government will support competition as FTTP rollouts slow and consolidation pressures grow.

The Government has modified the Single Supplier Framework agreement that they awarded to Openreach (BT) last year under their Project Gigabit broadband roll-out scheme (here). The deal was originally valued at “up to” £800m and designed to help upgrade 312,000 premises in some of the hardest to reach UK areas to FTTP. But this has just been boosted in value to £1.2bn.

In news that will surprise none of ISPreview’s regular readers. Several major UK banks, such as NatWest and Lloyds, among others, have confirmed that they’re setting aside funding to cover loans that were issued to alternative fibre broadband networks (altnets) and which are now deemed unlikely to be repaid in full.

Infracapital-backed UK ISP Fibrus today confirmed the completion of their £200m (state aid) Project Stratum contract in Northern Ireland, which helped to spread their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to 81,000 addition premises in poorly served rural areas “on time and within budget.”

Edinburgh-based ISP and network builder GoFibre recently published their annual accounts to the end of 2024, which among other things revealed that their revenues increased by 71% to £2.02m (2023: £1.17m). The operator now expects their roll-out of FTTP broadband in rural Scotland and North England to reach a footprint of 250,000 premises “in the next 3 years“.

Edinburgh-based UK ISP and network builder GoFibre has this morning announced that they’ve secured a huge £125m funding boost from the Scottish National Investment Bank (SNIB) and Hamburg Commercial Bank. The money will support their roll-out of FTTP broadband under the government backed Project Gigabit contracts in South and North East Scotland.

Fibre optic network supplier Emtelle UK, which is a global manufacturer of blown fibre, cabling and ducted solutions, has been chosen to help supply GoFibre’s new £105m (state aid) Project Gigabit contract for North East Scotland (here), which aims to extend their full fibre broadband (FTTP) network to “around” 63,000 premises in hard-to-reach rural areas.

Infracapital-backed network operator and UK ISP Fibrus has today revealed that their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit-capable broadband network has now covered 100,000 homes and businesses across Cumbria in England, which has been achieved less than three years after they started to build in the region (Nov 2022).

The North Yorkshire Council (NYC) in England has proposed to wind-up the NYNet 100 company, which was originally created to help carry out procurement and contract management for the local authority’s Superfast North Yorkshire (SFNY) project. This has helped 201,000 premises in the rural county to access faster broadband over the last 15 years.

The Government has today opened a new consultation on the sharing of information and fees payable by street works firms as part of operating the new National Underground Asset Register (NUAR), which is a digital map of underground UK pipes and cables (broadband, water etc.) that is partly designed to help reduce accidental damage.

The UK government has posted a Project Gigabit contract modification that shrinks Gigaclear’s £16.6m contract for rural parts of East Gloucestershire (Lot 18), which originally aimed to expand their gigabit-capable broadband network to 4,400 additional premises. But the change shrinks the value of this contract to £10.81m “due to removal of 899 premises” from its scope.

The UK Government (DSIT) appears set to expand their £18.8m (state aid) Project Gigabit contract with rural UK ISP Wessex Internet for South Wiltshire (LOT 30). This originally aimed to build their 10Gbps capable FTTP broadband network to cover “around” 14,500 hard-to-reach premises in the area (here), but will now look to reach 21,197 premises.

Rural focused UK ISP Quickline has revealed that they’ve now covered 2,000 premises as part of their £73.5m state-aid supported Project Gigabit roll-out contract for North Yorkshire (Lot 31), which was awarded a year ago (here). The contract aims to extend gigabit-capable broadband to reach an additional 36,300 premises in some of the hardest-to-reach areas.
