Plucky rural UK ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), which is deploying a community built and funded 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to remote premises in several counties across England, expects to achieve 6,000 live connections by the end of June and has raised £2m via crowdfunding.

Some 5,300 additional homes and business in Cambridgeshire look set to benefit from Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ultrafast broadband ISP technology. The news follows a new deal between the council and Openreach (BT), which will help to achieve their ambition for 99% “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage by the end of 2020.

The UK Government has today officially launched their new £200m Rural Gigabit Connectivity (RGC) programme, which was originally announced during the 2018 Budget and aims to encourage an “outside-in” approach to building new ultrafast broadband ISP networks by focusing on helping to connect rural areas.

Rural broadband ISP Gigaclear has been fined £10,339.17 in Somerset UK after it admitted that some of its work, which involved deploying a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network around the small market town of Wellington, had failed to comply with the 1991 New Road and Street Works Act.

The Welsh Government’s Deputy Minister for Economy and Transport, Lee Waters AM, finally said something last week that has been becoming increasingly obvious over the past few years, “we need to confront the fact that the market’s appetite, even with subsidy, for reaching premises with [FTTP] broadband is coming to an end.”

The £34m+ Digital Durham project, which has so far worked with Openreach (BT) to help increase the coverage of FTTC and FTTP based “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP networks to around 96% of local premises, is preparing to tender for a third contract to further extend coverage (starting in 2020).

The Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) has decided that it has too many different named broadband and “full fibre” programmes and as a result they’ve today opted to simplify by aligning all of them under just two overarching programmes – ‘The UK Fibre Programme‘ and ‘Building Digital UK‘.

BT Group’s new CEO has released his first full year results to the end of March 2019 (Q4 18/19 financial), which finds that Openreach’s FTTP and G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) ISP network has grown its coverage to 3.2 million UK premises (up from 2.6m last quarter). Take-up of FTTP is 24.54% and G.fast 1.24%.

A new Analysys Mason report has estimated that the £442.2m (public and private investment) Digital Scotland project with BT (Openreach), which covered an extra 930,000 premises via a mix of FTTC (VDSL2) and a little FTTP broadband technology, will create a total benefit to the Scottish economy of £2.76bn over 15 years.

The Whitehill & Bordon regeneration project, which is a joint venture between the Dorchester Group and UK house builder Taylor Wimpey, is working to ensure that thousands of new build homes in the area will be able to access a Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTH) broadband service from the day they move in.

A new cross-party report from the House of Lords Select Committee on the Rural Economy has warned that rural communities across the UK are still being “ignored and underrated,” with many still suffering from poor fixed line broadband ISP and mobile network connectivity. But they also recommend some possible solutions.

The good news is it continues to grow and boost coverage.

Despite a recent delay to Gigaclear’s state aid supported contract with the Superfast Essex (SFE) project (here), the rural UK ISP has today confirmed that some of the first homes in Uttlesford to benefit from their new 900Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network have now gone live in Birchanger.

Worcester-based ISP Airband has announced that they’ve begun the state aid supported roll-out of a new hybrid wireless and fibre optic broadband network to cover 10 rural communities (dispersed clusters) in Herefordshire (England), which forms part of a contract with the wider Fastershire programme.

A new report from the House of Lords has claimed that digital connectivity in coastal areas is “largely insufficient,” while investment in mobile and broadband ISP infrastructure “lagged considerably behind” urban areas. As a result they want support for “ultra-fast broadband” to be the Government’s “highest priority.”

The UK and Welsh Governments have today jointly announced that the £67m Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which normally offers up to £2,500 to help businesses and surrounding homes gain access to a 1Gbps capable broadband ISP connection (ideally “full fibre” FTTP), is to be boosted up to £5,500 in Wales.

The Scottish Government (SG) has been heavily criticised by an opposition Conservative MP, John Lamont, after it confirmed that the bidding process for their £600m R100 (Reaching 100%) programme was still ongoing and that contracts would now be vaguely awarded some time “during 2019.”
