Broadband ISP and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 have today announced that they’ve become the second major UK telecoms provider, after BT (EE), to adopt Hiya’s AI-based technologies, which can analyse call behaviour in real-time and determine whether to flag an incoming call as ‘suspected spam’ or block fraud.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today moved to strengthen their existing rules against the use of “fake phone numbers” and “spoofed calls“, which involves a proposal for phone providers (fixed line and mobile) to introduce stricter measures against “Presentation Numbers” that are used to identify who is making a call.

Network builder and UK ISP Pine Media, which has been steadily deploying their own gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband infrastructure across parts of South Yorkshire, Kent and rural Derbyshire, has informed ISPreview that part of their network in Sheffield was recently hit by what appears to be a targeted attack.

Broadband ISP Ogi, which is deploying a multi-Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across parts of South Wales, has informed ISPreview that the police have been called in after their new network suffered “extensive” damage in a “targeted attack” that left some customers disconnected.

The new UK Criminal Justice Bill (CJB), which was first tabled in parliament toward the end of last year, includes a number of interesting new powers that can force Regional Internet Registries, Local Internet Registries or Internet Service Providers (ISP) to suspend internet domain names and IP addresses used for criminal purposes.

A major UK newspaper has suggested that some alternative broadband operators, many of which are deploying new gigabit-capable full fibre ISP networks, are being “lazy” by failing to hand over information about “when and where they are working on BT’s network“, which allegedly risks “exposing hospitals and banks to cyber attacks“.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE has today forecast that Saturday 23rd December 2023 will be the “busiest day for SMS delivery scams“, with criminals targeting shoppers in the last-minute rush before Christmas. The same day in 2022 saw 3 million SMS scam attempts being blocked by the operator – the highest number of the entire year.

Police have been called in after vandals caused “extensive” damage to part of Netomnia’s (supported by UK ISP YouFibre) new full fibre broadband network in Liverpool, where the operator is currently investing £39 million on a large deployment project. But thankfully only a few customers have felt the impact.

The UK telecoms and media regulator, Ofcom, has today launched a new consultation that looks set to tackle the risk of consumer harm from so-called “cash for calls” schemes. This will work by making clear that revenue sharing on certain phone number ranges (e.g. 084 and 087) will not be permitted.

Mobile operator Lyca Mobile, which last week confirmed that it had been struck by a serious cyberattack that disrupted their systems and connectivity services across the UK (as well as in various other countries), has now confirmed that the hackers also “accessed at least some of the personal information held in our systems“.

Some 880 homes, businesses and schools in the Hertfordshire (England) town of Rickmansworth, which is home to a total population of over 25,000, have been left without a working fixed broadband ISP and phone service. The situation occurred after criminals damaged Openreach’s local network while attempting to steal their copper telecoms cable.

The Southwark Crown Court in London has today found an autistic Oxfordshire teenager, Arion Kurtaj (18), responsible for having hacked a number of major companies – including, among others, broadband ISP and mobile giant BT (EE)- while acting as a member of the wider Lapsus$ hacking group.
