The Old Bailey criminal court in London has today jailed two hackers – Matthew Hanley (23) and Connor Allsopp (21) – for their part in the 2015 cyber-attack against TalkTalk’s website. This ultimately cost the broadband ISP around £77 million and exposed the personal data of 156,959 customers.

The European Court of Human Rights has today ruled that the United Kingdom’s mass surveillance programmes, which came to light in 2013 after ex-NSA employee Edward Snowden leaked significant details to the press, were unlawful and “incapable of keeping the ‘interference’ to what is ‘necessary in a democratic society’“.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland has this week issued a second warning about UK broadband customers being scammed after £78,000 was stolen from 5 people by fake ISP support agents over the past month. But there’s now a worrying new “compensation” twist to the fraud.

The Government’s Intellectual Property Office has today published its 8th study into the extent of online copyright infringement by broadband ISP and mobile users, which estimates that 15% of UK Internet users aged 12+ (6.525 million people) had downloaded at least one item of “illegal” online content (unchanged from 2017).

A couple of months ago we reported that Virgin Media was facing 14 alleged safety breaches in the Carlisle Magistrates’ Court, which related to the expansion of their cable broadband and TV network in Cumbria. This week the ISP admitted to seven offences and was fined £385,000.

At the start of 2017 several ISPs, including BT, Virgin Media, TalkTalk and Sky Broadband, began sending the first internet piracy warning emails (“subscriber alerts“) to those suspected of taking part in copyright infringement (here). Today even the government are still clueless as to its progress.

Cable TV and ultrafast broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) seems to be in hot water again after the Carlisle Magistrates’ Court in Cumbria highlighted 14 alleged safety breaches (locations), which relate to the Project Lightning network expansion in residential areas.

The Information Commissioner’s Office has today hit Carphone Warehouse with a £400K fine after a 2015 hack, which resulted in a major breach of personal data for 3.3 million customers + 1,000 staff and indirectly affected the CPW hosted mobile site for UK broadband ISP TalkTalk.

Troubled Kent-based broadband and phone provider True Telecom, which entered administration in November 2017 (here), has found a buyer for its customer base but not the company itself. The administrators report also reveals that HMRC sought £722,916 from the company as part of a winding-up petition.

Europol, which helps the 28 member states of the EU (inc. UK) to fight serious international crime and terrorism, has called on broadband and mobile providers to end the use of Carrier Grade NAT (CGN) in order to “increase accountability online” and stop people “sharing the same IP address as a criminal.“

Fears are growing that potentially up to 44 million consumers in the United Kingdom, including customers of BT and possibly other broadband providers, could be caught up in the huge personal data breach that hit US credit rating firm Equifax from May – July 2017 (details were only revealed last week!).

A new report claims that customers of BT’s broadband and phone services are being targeted by fraudsters based in India. The criminals will often call and pretend to act as official customer support agents in order to hijack your PC / steal money, although this crime is by no means unique to BT.

Once again the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has today whacked broadband ISP TalkTalk with a £100,000 fine, which comes after several accounts at their outsourced Wipro call centre in India were used to access the personal data of 21,000 customers.
