The Broadband Stakeholders Group, which acts as a think-tank for the government, has published a new report that summarises the risks and challenges of Brexit for Internet and digital communications across the United Kingdom (broadband, mobile, USO, state aid policy etc.).

Inmarsat’s plan to improve broadband connectivity on aircraft appears to have taken a hit today after rival Satellite operator ViaSat accused the London-based ISP of “misusing spectrum” and gaining an “unfair competitive advantage” by “creating a monopoly for European in-flight connectivity.”

The European Commission has released their 2017 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which uses data from 2016 to reveal the United Kingdom’s progress towards the EU’s Digital Agenda goals (e.g. NGA 30Mbps+ broadband for all by 2020). Sadly we’ve dropped from 6th to 7th place.

A new voucher scheme has been launched for businesses in Herefordshire, Shropshire, Gloucestershire and the Borough of Telford & Wrekin (England), which offers local SMEs up to £25,000 to help fund the installation of a 30Mbps+ “superfast” Next Generation Access (NGA) broadband connection.

The cost of deploying ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) broadband networks throughout the EU, which currently still includes the United Kingdom, has today been revised by Comsof on behalf of the FTTH Council Europe and the new estimate is £134 billion (€156bn).

The Court of Justice of the European Union has struck a blow to the UK’s controversial Internet snooping Investigatory Powers Act 2016 by ruling that EU law does not allow “general and indiscriminate retention of traffic data and location data,” except for “targeted” use against “serious crime“.

Aviation and technology company Boeing has completed the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) for the first two ViaSat-3 class satellites, which will be able to handle 1 Terabit per second of data and make it possible to offer 100Mbps packages to home users in the Americas, UK, Europe, Middle East and Africa.

The European Commission and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have today unveiled plans for a new €500m (£420m at today’s rate) Connecting Europe Broadband Fund (CEBF), which over the next 10 years will help the EU to reach their “Gigabit Society” objectives (e.g. 100Mbps+ for all by 2025).

The European Commission has today clarified the safeguards (“fair use policy“) that will exist alongside their plan to end EU mobile roaming charges from 15th June 2017 (i.e. any call, text or data allowance used will come from your domestic plan).

Mobile operator EE has introduced the ‘Travel Data Pass‘ to replace their old ‘Euro Data Pass‘ for Pay Monthly customers, which makes it cheaper to use Mobile Broadband while roaming around an additional 11 countries (including several outside of the EU, such as Australia, UAE, USA, Canada and Thailand).

The United Kingdom’s Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has criticised the Government’s sudden decision to include mandatory blocking of all “adult” websites into the forthcoming Digital Economy Bill 2017, which they say has “the potential to significantly harm the digital economy.”

The Chancellor of the United Kingdom, Philip Hammond, has today given his first Autumn Statement 2016 and revealed a bit of extra detail about the plan to encourage investment worth £1bn+ towards the roll-out of ultrafast pure fibre optic broadband (FTTP/H) and 5G Mobile. Business rates will also be cut.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, claims to have found “reasonable grounds for believing” that some of EE’s customers may have received inaccurate bills that “over-[charged] them for calls they made to its customer service number, 150, whilst roaming in the EU.”
