UK Cities and Towns Collect Vouchers to Install Free Public WiFi

Cities, towns and other UK districts with their own local government will today hopefully be taking part in the first call up for vouchers under the new €120m (£105m) WiFi4EU initiative, which aspires to equip “every European village and city with free WiFi internet access” by 2020.

The European Commission has begun inviting municipalities from all over Europe (including the UK) to register their details for the chance to secure vouchers worth £13k under the €120m (£104m) WiFi4EU initiative, which aims to equip “every European village and city with free WiFi internet access” by 2020.

UK Satellite Operator Inmarsat Says European Aviation Network is GO

The prospect of superfast in-flight broadband, across the UK and EU, took a big step forward this week after Inmarsat confirmed that they had completed their new European Aviation Network (EAN), which mixes a new multi-beam S-band Satellite with 300 ground-based 4G (LTE) stations.

The latest Q4 2017 crowd-sourced data from RFBenchmark has compared various European countries by their Mobile Broadband (3G/4G) performance, which found that the UK delivered an average download speed of 16.9Mbps (7.85Mbps upload) and latency of 101ms (milliseconds).

As expected the Welsh Government has this afternoon set out the first tentative details of their new strategy to help make “fast reliable broadband” (defined as 30Mbps+) available to “every property” in Wales, which will involve several contracts (3 lots) and could cover 88,000 premises.

Wales Could Unveil New Superfast Broadband Rollout Plan Next Week

The Welsh Government (WG) has suggested that it will next week publish information on new rollout plan for “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) services, which could set out their strategy for extending related networks to cover the whole of Wales (benefiting approximately 98,145 additional premises).

ICMR 2017 – Ofcom Compares UK Broadband and Mobile to 16 Countries

Market regulator Ofcom has today published its International Communications Market Report 2017, which compares broadband and other telecoms services in the United Kingdom against 16 other countries. The UK fairs well for 30Mbps+ broadband coverage but our “full fibre” (FTTP/H) needs work.

A new batch of crowd-sourced data from RFBenchmark compares European countries by their Mobile Broadband (3G / 4G) performance. Overall the UK appears to trail most other countries with an average download of 11.9Mbps (4.2Mbps upload) and network latency of 108 milliseconds.

The European Commission (EC) has this week named the five winners of their annual 2017 European Broadband Awards, which saw Colchester’s 1Gbps open access passive fibre network in the UK (Essex) pick-up one of the awards for their deployment to 850 SMEs and 1,100 homes.

UK Ranks 63rd Cheapest in the World for Broadband Internet Connectivity

A new study has examined the price of fixed line broadband in 196 countries via 3,351 packages (conducted between 18th August and 12th October 2017), which reveals that the United Kingdom is only the 63rd cheapest (average of USD $40.62 a month overall or $1.01 per megabit of speed).

Ofcom Investigates Lycamobile Over Surcharge for EU Mobile Roaming

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has begun an investigation of Lycamobile in order to determine whether the operator breached industry regulations for EU mobile roaming, not least by levying a surcharge and applying overly strict data (3G, 4G) roaming limits.

Europol Calls on Internet Providers to End CGNAT IP Address Sharing

Europol, which helps the 28 member states of the EU (inc. UK) to fight serious international crime and terrorism, has called on broadband and mobile providers to end the use of Carrier Grade NAT (CGN) in order to “increase accountability online” and stop people “sharing the same IP address as a criminal.“

EU Raise BT Competition Concern Over Business Rates for UK Fibre Broadband
