The Intelligence and Security Committee has described parts of the Government’s new Draft Investigatory Powers Bill (IPB), which aims to expand the United Kingdom’s existing Internet spying laws to include every citizen, as being “inconsistent and largely incomprehensible.”

Oh no, not again. TalkTalk has found itself in yet more hot water over their security after the ISP admitted that private information being held by its own “BrightSparks” engineers (NOT Openreach) had been compromised and strategically abused to defraud several subscribers.

The Government’s new Internet Snooping ‘Investigatory Powers Bill‘ is very light on technical detail and being rushed into life so quickly that even now none of the major or minor ISPs seem to know what will actually be required of them, which is causing real concerns for providers like Zen Internet.

A new report from security consultant Paul Moore has revealed that many of the United Kingdom’s major broadband ISPs, including BT, PlusNet, EE, Virgin Media, Sky Broadband and TalkTalk, have significant vulnerabilities in their systems that could be exploited by hackers. But some, such as EE and TalkTalk, did far worse than others.

After the recent hacking and theft of personal data from several ISPs, including TalkTalk (here) and Vodafone (here), we can today report that the Northern Ireland focused wireless ISP Bluebox Broadband (North West Electronics) is the latest to fall victim with 3,000 people affected.

At the end of last week TalkTalk informed their broadband and phone customers that “less than” 1.2 million customer email addresses, names and phone numbers had been compromised by the cyber-attack on their website (here), but today this has been sharply revised down to the figure of 156,959.

British police have arrested a fourth person, a 16 year old boy from Norwich, in connection with the recent cyber-attack on TalkTalk’s website (here), which resulted in the personal details of 1.2 million broadband ISP customers being stolen by Internet criminals.

Vodafone has said that their security is “fundamentally effective” after they became the latest major UK telecoms operator after TalkTalk to be hit by a breach, which between 28th and 29th October 2015 resulted in 1,827 customers having their accounts accessed by cyber criminals.

Internet provider TalkTalk has today confirmed exactly how much data was compromised in last week’s website hack and the good-ish news is that less than 21,000 unique bank account details were stolen, although 1.2 million customer email addresses, names and phone numbers weren’t so lucky.
