The UK Government’s Science and Technology Secretary, Peter Kyle, has today outlined a raft of new investments, reforms and appointments aimed at “supercharging innovation and helping to grow the economy“, which among other things includes an investment of £23m into “cutting edge telecoms research and deployment“.

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has just unexpectedly announced that alternative network provider Freedom Fibre has “mutually agreed to terminate” the £43m (state aid) Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contract for Cheshire (Lot 17), which would have expanded a full fibre (FTTP) network to 15,000 premises in hard to reach areas.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents many of the UK’s alternative gigabit broadband operators, has today called on the UK government to ensure that their future Industrial Strategy “prioritises digital infrastructure“. The group wants this to be supported by a national campaign to promote full fibre-adoption, among other things.

The public policy team from broadband and mobile operator Vodafone (UK) has, once again, started a debate over the future of Net Neutrality rules (i.e. protecting the open internet from abuse by network operators) and warned that “telecoms networks are not infinite … [and] … overconsumption of this valuable and finite resource is already putting them at risk of degradation and depletion“.

Residents in part of Garforth, which is a town in the metropolitan borough of the City of Leeds (England), have vented anger at alternative network operator Giggle Fibre (aka – Giggle, Giggle Broadband, Giggle Holdings) and pledged to “boycott the service” after they complained it had started deploying lots of “unsightly” new poles for their full fibre broadband network.

Network analyst firm Streetwave has revealed that they’ve won another contract, this time via the Derbyshire County Council (DCC) in England, to map 4G and 5G mobile broadband coverage across another 10,000km of the UK’s road network in the East Midlands of England, using bin lorries.

Alternative network operator and UK ISP Quickline has today issued a small progress update on their £44m state aid supported gigabit broadband roll-out contract for South Yorkshire (Lot 20 – here) in England, which aims to reach 32,100 additional premises in hard-to-reach rural areas (plus 29,000 via a complementary commercial build).

Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited (DMSL), which represents the four major UK mobile operators (EE, O2, Vodafone and Three UK), has today confirmed that 10 more government-funded rural 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades have just gone live in Scotland as part of the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project.

The UK government has today set out its plan for increasing digital skills to help “deliver growth and opportunity for all“, which among other things includes various pledges from key ISPs and mobile operators (e.g. BT, CityFibre, Vodafone etc.) to help support the initiative and break down the digital divide that still exists for many people.

UK ISP Quickline has today given a progress update on their £118.9m state aid backed contracts under the Government’s Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme for Lincolnshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire (Lot 23), which will see their 10Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP) network being expanded to cover 72,000 premises in hard to reach rural areas.

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has made a change this week that closes their Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS) for Newcastle and North Tyneside (Tyne and Wear), which means that local homes and businesses in poorly served rural areas can no longer apply for big grants to help get a much faster broadband ISP network installed.

Mobile network operator Vodafone UK has won a key court case against leasing firm AP Wireless (inc. the affiliated Icon Tower company). Some operators believe the firm could risk damaging their roll-out of 5G based mobile broadband technology, such as by pushing up their costs and threatening the viability of future deployments.

Edinburgh-based ISP GoFibre has secured a third contract under the UK government’s £5bn Project Gigabit scheme, which is worth £26.2m (state aid) and will see them expand their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover around 11,000 premises across hard-to-reach rural areas in the Scottish Borders and East Lothian regions.

Abingdon-based rural ISP Gigaclear has today announced that they’ve kicked off the construction phase of their £25.4m (state aid) Project Gigabit contracts for South Oxfordshire (Lot 13.01 – c.5,500 premises) and North Oxfordshire (Lot 13.02 – c.4,200 premises), which will extend their full fibre (FTTP) broadband network to around 9,500 premises in hard-to-reach areas.

High Speed 2 Ltd, which is a non-departmental public body that is wholly funded by the UK Government’s Department for Transport (DfT) and oversees the HS2 rail project, has signed a £99.6m deal (£80.5m in public funding) with Hitachi and Telent to design and deploy telecommunications services across the new rail network, including passenger voice and broadband connectivity.

Wireless infrastructure provider Freshwave, which is backed by investment firm DigitalBridge and naturally has its own vested interests in this field, have published a new study that claims a focus on improving indoor mobile (4G, 5G etc.) signals and “eliminating mobile dead zones” could help to grow the UK economy by £70bn a year.

The UK government has published its revised Telecare National Action Plan (TNAP), which will require major UK broadband and phone providers (e.g. BT, Virgin Media, Vodafone and Sky Broadband) to go further with protecting vulnerable telecare users when upgrading legacy phone lines to new digital (IP based) networks.
