The Scottish Government‘s Connectivity Secretary, Fergus Ewing, has this week launched a new “Up Your Street” campaign that aims to promote more take-up of the country’s hybrid fibre (FTTC / Cable) dominated fixed line broadband services, which can reach nearly 97% of homes and businesses across Scotland.

The telecoms regulator has today published an update to last year’s annual Connected Nations report, which uses more recent data from 2018 to provide the latest coverage statistics for UK mobile and fixed line broadband networks. For example, “full fibre” (FTTH/P) now reaches 4% (1.2 million premises).

Mobile operator EE (BT) has completed the construction of its 90th brand new mast site in Scotland within the last 12 months, which has helped to boost their 4G landmass (geographic) network coverage in the country to more than 75%. By comparison EE’s overall landmass coverage of the UK is 90%.

The UK cities of Edinburgh, Coventry, Huddersfield and Stirling have today been named as the next to be covered via Cityfibre and Vodafone’s joint deployment of a new Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) broadband ISP network by the end of 2021.

A curious new report from BroadbandChoices has claimed that only 12 out of the 391 UK councils analysed have reached 95% coverage of “superfast broadband” and the worst is allegedly West Dunbartonshire (Scotland), which suffers from only 11% coverage. Except it’s completely wrong.

The Scottish Government has today announced that 95.5% of homes and businesses across Scotland should be able to order a “high speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) based internet line, although this figure drops to just 92.7% when considering those able to access “superfast broadband” speeds of 24Mbps+.

The Scottish Government‘s Rural Economy Secretary, Fergus Ewing, has called on the UK government to correct the “grossly unfair” 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, which appears to be in conflict with Scotland’s own £600m plan to deploy 30Mbps+ broadband to nearly all homes.

A new study has estimated that around 4.1% of premises in the United Kingdom are likely to be affected by full to capacity FTTC (VDSL2) based “fibre broadband” street cabinets on Openreach’s (BT) network, which is up from 3% last year. Related premises may be unable to order the faster ISP service.

An independent model has estimated that the coverage of fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services across the United Kingdom has grown slightly from 94.7% in December 2017 (here) to 95.1% at the end of March 2018, with most of the increase being fuelled by publicly funded projects.

Community ISP HebNet CIC has worked with Scottish Sea Farms (SSF) to deploy an enterprise-grade wireless link between the Isle of Skye and Knoydart in rural Scotland, which has connected both the local Salmon farms and delivered 30Mbps+ broadband speeds to nearby homes.

The Balquhidder Community Broadband project, which is a Community Interest Company (CIC) that has won support from UK ISP Bogons and the Stirling Council in Scotland, has officially launched their new 1Gbps FTTP broadband network that will serve all 197 premises in the Balquhidder area.

Cable operator Virgin Media have announced that Project Lighting has so far extended their 350Mbps capable broadband and TV network to 100,000 extra premises in Scotland and they “plan to connect thousands” more in 2018, although oddly they aren’t saying how many more.

A meeting of the UK Wireless Internet Service Providers Association has named the four suppliers that are bidding on Scotland’s R100 project, which aspires to make “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) available to 100% of the country by the end of 2021 (March 2022 as a financial year).

A new crowd-sourced study of 3G and 4G based Mobile Broadband performance from Tutela has revealed how Three UK, O2, Vodafone and EE (BT) perform across England, Wales and Scotland, as well as generally for the whole of the United Kingdom. As usual EE retains the overall top spot.

The Scottish Government has today announced a new investment of £25 million that will be used to fund the 4G Infill Programme, which aims to help build new mobile network masts in locations with no existing 4G coverage in order to improve local connectivity.

ISP Vodafone and fibre optic builder Cityfibre have today confirmed that the second UK city to benefit from a deployment of their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) ultrafast broadband network will be Aberdeen in Scotland, which is expected to cost around £40m.
