Remote Balquhidder Community Preps Own 1Gbps FTTH Broadband

The remote rural community of Balquhidder in the Stirling council area of Scotland has setup its own Community Interest Company (CIC) and is poised to start the roll-out of an ultrafast 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which could benefit up to 170 local properties.

The £410 million Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband project has today announced the achievement of their first contract target, which means that 85% of homes and businesses in the country can now access a faster “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) connection.

Highlands Council in Scotland Moves to Tackle Broadband Notspots

The Highlands Council has agreed to commence a mapping exercise that aims to identify the remaining “not spots” in superfast broadband cover, which is to be accompanied by a workshop event next month to debate the issue. It’s hoped this will help to establish a clear plan for boosting coverage.

Ofcom Redefine Ultrafast Broadband as 300Mbps, But Only 2% Coverage

The UK telecoms regulator has today published its Connected Nations 2015 report and confirmed that 83% of premises are now within reach of a fixed line superfast broadband (30Mbps+) service (up from 75% in 2014), with take-up reaching 27% (up from 22%). But they also changed the definition of “ultrafast” speeds from 100Mbps+ to 300Mbps+.
