Fibre optic network builder CityFibre has today announced that the first business customers have now gone live on their new 1000Mbps capable fibre optic broadband (FTTP) network in the city of Aberdeen (Aberdeen Core), which has also just completed the first city centre construction phase.

The £410m Digital Scotland project claims that the on-going fight to deploy BT’s faster “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services into areas that were previously hobbled by the dreaded Exchange Only Lines (EOL) is having a strong impact, with around 60,000 such premises in 130 locations having benefitted.

Residents and businesses living in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides have finally benefitted from the on-going BT and Digital Scotland project, which has successfully deployed “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC) services to 3,600 premises in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has announced plans to create 400 new customer service jobs across the United Kingdom, with around 200 going to their contract centres in Scotland (100 at Uddingston, 50 in Livingston and 50 more at Dunfermline) and the rest to their bases in Newcastle and Stockport (England).

A recently elected Highlands MP in Scotland, Drew Hendry (SNP), has called for a radical change in Ofcom’s regulatory policy that would allow UK mobile phone customers to exit their contracts without penalty if they suffered from poor or no signal coverage. But notspots or areas of weak signal are common.

BT plans to recruit another 500 or so broadband and phone engineers from across the United Kingdom this year and they’ve today confirmed that 112 of those will be focused in Scotland, including from areas around Orkney, Oban, Greenock, Galashiels and in the Highlands and Islands and North East.

The latest Broadband Delivery UK Market Testing Pilot (MTP) to go live is Avanti’s scheme, which is using their Ka-band HYLAS 1 and HYLAS 2 Satellite spacecraft to deliver broadband speeds of up to 30Mbps to potentially 13,000 premises across parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland (e.g. Antrim, Aberdeenshire, Dumfries, Galloway, The Borders).

Some £109,078 of funding from the Scottish Government’s Community Broadband Scotland (CBS) initiative has enabled the fixed wireless broadband ISP AB Internet to work with the local Loch Tay community (Perth and Kinross) and roll-out a faster Internet service to around 350 people in 150+ premises.

A new online YouGov poll of 100 IT decision makers in Scotland, which was commissioned by Cityfibre, has reported that 92% of respondents view high quality, fast broadband as important to the success of their company and yet 52% felt as if connectivity in Scotland was worse than other parts of the UK.

Apparently BT is having to draw up an urgent plan to tackle broadband capacity problems on the remote Shetland Islands, which resides off the northern coast of Scotland. Locals have reportedly noticed a huge fall in their Internet speeds after the operator’s first “fibre broadband” (FTTC) connections went live last year.

The Digital Scotland project, which is working with BT to roll-out “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services to 85% of premises in Scotland by the end of 2015/16 and 95% by the end of 2017/18, has today announced the next batch of 200 communities (145,000 premises) that will benefit from that deployment.

A tearful 8 year old boy, Scott Burnett, from the remote Scottish hamlet of Clola in Buchan (Aberdeenshire) has written an emotional letter to BT in the hope that the operator might find a way to improve the local broadband provision. “Everyone in my school has broadband and I don’t“, said Scott.

The Deputy First Minister for the Scottish Government, John Swinney, has written to the UK’s Digital Economy Minister, Ed Vaizey, in order to call for broadband in Scotland to become part of a legally binding Universal Service Obligation. The move is designed to “ensure everyone in Scotland can access affordable, high-speed broadband“.

The Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has announced that a new project, which is being funded by £58,500 from Community Broadband Scotland (CBS), Perth and Kinross Council and the Griffin Windfarm Fund, will imminently help to connect several rural villages that circle Tay Forest Park (Amulree, Trochry and Struan) to a new fixed wireless broadband network.
