CityFibre has today secured another five of the UK government’s Project Gigabit broadband rollout contracts, totalling over £394m. The deals will spread their full fibre (FTTP) ISP network to over 202,000 hard to reach premises across parts of Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Berkshire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire, Sussex, Kent, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire & Milton Keynes.

Technical UK consultancy firm FarrPoint has today published their second annual (2024) survey of digital leaders at councils across England, Scotland and Wales. The results reveal that getting more areas covered by gigabit broadband is still the top priority for the second year running, while 5G divides opinion.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has revealed that their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network has now been deployed to cover 50% of properties in Wales. The coverage equates to a total of 816,000 premises (up from 700k in July 2023) and reflects an investment of £240m+ (up from £210m).

In a perhaps unsurprising development, given recent news, Infracapital-backed broadband ISP Fibrus, which is building a new full fibre (FTTP) network across Northern Ireland and parts of North England, have begun a redundancy consultation that is expected to result in an unspecified number of job losses among their civil engineers.

The Government has today confirmed that 80% of the United Kingdom now has access to a gigabit-capable broadband ISP network, which marks good progress on their way to achieving at least 85% coverage by 2025, and then “nationwide” (c.99%) coverage by 2030. But most of the progress so far has been fuelled by commercial builds.

Infracapital-backed broadband ISP Fibrus, which is building a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across Northern Ireland and parts of North England, has revealed that their deployment in Cumbria has now reached 36,000 premises (including nearly 12,000 across the town of Workington).

Three years have now passed since UK broadband ISP FACTCO confirmed that it would be deploying their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the small commuter village of Stocksfield in the south of Northumberland (England), but so far not a single property in the community has gone live.

A new alternative network and broadband ISP called Gig-ability is in the final stages of being setup. The operator appears, at least initially, to be planning to deploy a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across poorly served rural villages in Shropshire (England), before expanding into other parts of the UK.

The latest UK summary of fixed broadband coverage for H2 2023 has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have grown to reach 60.54% of premises (up from 52.77% in H1 2023) and 79.86% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 76.22%). As usual, we’re ending 2023 by taking a look back to see how the United Kingdom’s position, at least in terms of the top 50 fastest countries for both fixed broadband ISP and mobile (4G, 5G) data speeds, has changed since 2022. The UK fell from 44th to 51st for mobile and was unchanged at 56th for fixed lines.

Rural broadband ISP GoFibre (BorderLink) has announced that they’ve completed their first phase of build under the £7.3m state-aid supported Project Gigabit broadband rollout contract for North Northumberland (England), which has seen their network cover more than 1,100 hard-to-reach homes in three areas.

Rural broadband ISP Wessex Internet has today announced that they’ve entered the roll-out phase of their £14m state aid supported Project Gigabit broadband contract for the New Forest area (Lot 27.01) of Hampshire (England), which will see them extend a full fibre (FTTP) network to “around” 10,500 hard-to-reach premises.

The Building Digital UK agency has released their Winter 2023 (Dec) progress update on the £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme, which is so far running live contracts and procurements worth over £2bn in state aid to help extend coverage to an extra 1.1 million hard to reach premises.

The Government’s executive Building Digital UK agency has today published a series of reports that evaluate different parts of their gigabit and full fibre broadband upgrade programmes, albeit broadly all focused on dark fibre style deployments to connect public sector sites (e.g. schools, council offices, hospitals etc.).

The UK Government has finally revealed that Scotland’s share of the £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme will be an “estimated” £450m, although market engagement work is ongoing (i.e. getting feedback from suppliers) and has yet to reach the procurement stage – this was originally supposed to happen in the autumn.

The Hampshire County Council (HCC) in England has concluded its state aid supported Superfast Broadband Programme (SFBB) and published a new report that summarises its “achievements and lessons learnt“. Overall, the project helped to extend superfast (30Mbps+) speeds from 80% in 2012 to 97.8% today, exceeding its 95% target.

Infracapital-backed UK broadband ISP Fibrus, which is building a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across Northern Ireland and North England, has confirmed to ISPreview that they’ve had to pull out of the state aid supported Project Gigabit contract for the North East of England. But existing builds will continue.
